Week 6 Tuesday Champions League Review

Matchday 6,Day 1

FC Copenhagen 0-2 Real Madrid

Copenhagen, the Danish side kept the 32 time La Liga winners Real Madrid under pressure for the first quarter of the match. They created quiet a few chances but not a clear cut opportunity for a goal.

Luka Modric scored an absolute beauty at minute 25. The Croatian veteran showed great class scoring his fifth goal for Real Madrid among which, all five are from outside the box. Just before the interval,a goal of Copenhagen was disallowed as Iker Casillas was fouled during a corner kick. Just after the play started in the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo gave Real a 2 goal advantage. A tap in from Pepe’s header. Later in the match, Ronaldo was fouled in the penalty box which earned Real a spot kick. But it was a rare miss for Ronaldo. He missed from the spot only for the third time wearing a Real Madrid shirt.

Manchester United 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester United finish top of group A as they defeat Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford which is their first win in three matches at their home ground. English centre half Phil Jones scored the only goal of the match. A great strike from the Englishman. But overall, Manchester United were not as convincing as they would have liked to be. Shakhtar did provide enough threat to make the Scottish manager worried about his team. Adnan Januzaj made his Champions League debut.

David Moyes’s reaction after the match

“It’s a great tournament, all United supporters love it. I’m looking forward to taking those fans back to another final, and hope the draw is kind to us.” More: http://bit.ly/1dnstVF

Bayern Munich 2-3 Manchester City

The big upset of the day was this fixture. Bayern Munich who had won their last ten Champions League matches lost to Manchester City. Manchester City didn’t have their full squad playing, still they managed to squeeze 3 points out of Allianz Arena. Munich took a 2 goal lead only after 12 minutes. Thomas Muller started the goal festival and Mario Gotze joined him after a few minutes. Bayern had the game in their control in the first half. Though right before the half an hour mark, David Silva tapped in a goal to make the scoreline 2-1. At the hour mark, City earned themselves a penalty. Their skipper for the night, Aleksandar Kolarov converted the spot kick and the match was at level. Only after three minutes, James Milner, the England international scored a stunner. And City took the lead for the first time in the match. Bayern pressed harder. With substitutes like Shaqiri and Martinez, but the Premier League champions of 2012 held their nerves and came across the line. A victory at Berlin still couldn’t see City top the group as Munich top the group on goal difference.

The Record Breaker, Record Maker

Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 9 goals in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League which is a new record. He surpassed legends like Crespo, Van Nisterlrooy. The Portuguese phenomenon scored 9 goals in 5 matches including an away hat-trick against the Turkish giants Galatasaray and 3 goals in 2 matches against the Italian powerhouse Juventus.
