Liverpool fans are asking one question ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League tie: will Isak play vs Atletico?

Head coach Arne Slot has confirmed that the £125 million striker could make his Reds debut but is still far from full fitness.

The Sweden international was absent from Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League victory at Burnley, instead staying in Liverpool for recovery work with fitness staff.

Slot explained that while Isak might get 45 minutes against Atletico Madrid, supporters should not expect him to play a full game any time soon.

Why Didn’t Isak Play vs Burnley?

So, will Isak play vs Atletico after being left out at Turf Moor? Slot revealed that Isak’s lack of pre-season training is the reason behind his absence.

The 25-year-old refused to take part in preparations with Newcastle United as he pushed for his record-breaking transfer to Anfield.

“He did recovery today,” Slot said. “He had a hard and tough session yesterday. It’s not that difficult to understand.

“We got him from Newcastle in a state where his pre-season is going to start now. He needs proper minutes of training before he has a certain base, let alone for him to play twice in three days.

Will Isak Play vs Atletico?

Isak, who Slot describes as the best striker in the world, has only played 18 minutes of competitive football since May 25, coming on during Sweden’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Kosovo last week.

Slot praised the Swedish national team for easing him back in but reiterated that Liverpool must be patient.

“In Sweden, they gave him good sessions without too much game time. We did the same. Now he will be able — either Wednesday or Saturday — to play 45 as a minimum, maybe a bit more,” Slot said.

However, the Liverpool boss warned that minutes must be carefully managed: “If he plays 45 on Wednesday, don’t expect him to play 45 or more on Saturday against Everton. His body isn’t ready for that yet.”

Slot’s words suggest that the debate over will Isak play vs Atletico leans towards “yes” — but only in a limited role.

Liverpool Looking to Integrate Record Signing Gradually

Liverpool invested heavily to secure Isak’s services from Newcastle, viewing him as a long-term solution in attack.

His pace, link-up play and finishing ability are expected to give the Reds another dimension once he is fully fit.

For now, Slot is focused on making sure the striker is built up slowly to handle the demands of Liverpool’s busy schedule.

With Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and the Merseyside derby against Everton on Saturday, Liverpool supporters may only see glimpses of their new star before he is ready for regular action.
