Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim retains the backing of the board despite Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup humiliation against Grimsby Town.
The Portuguese boss looked devastated as his rotated side slumped to a penalty shoot-out defeat to the League Two outfit.
The result prompted fresh speculation about Amorim’s future, but United are not planning to sack him ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley.
Club figures, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are understood to be standing firm.
They still believe Amorim deserves more time to turn results around, though patience will be tested if poor performances continue.
Is Ruben Amorim Under Pressure At Old Trafford?
United’s season has started in disappointing fashion.
Despite a promising display in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal — where they created but squandered numerous chances — the Reds threw away a lead to draw 1-1 with Fulham and were then embarrassed by Grimsby.
Amorim apologised to the travelling fans after the cup exit and admitted he “could not explain” why his team performed so badly.
The head coach, an emotional character by nature, was described by insiders as more reflective on Thursday, though still frustrated.
The fixture list does him no favours. After facing Burnley this weekend, United travel to Manchester City once the international break is over before hosting Chelsea.
But United’s problems are not solely down to Amorim. Defender Diogo Dalot admitted after the Grimsby defeat that “we clearly were not good enough” and that the squad failed to show the right intensity.
The club is also open to offloading fringe players such as Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Antony.
Meanwhile, United are in the market for a new goalkeeper, to provide competition for Andre Onana, who endured a poor night at Blundell Park.
Will United Sack Amorim?
So, will United sack Amorim? For now, the answer appears to be no.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the board want stability and believe the Portuguese coach should be given a chance to correct course.
Amorim has only managed seven wins in 29 Premier League matches since replacing Erik ten Hag last November.
However, he did lead United to the Europa League final last season, where they narrowly lost to Tottenham.
Sources suggest the club will not make a knee-jerk decision, but results in the coming weeks will be crucial.
Another run of poor form could see pressure mount and the board’s stance change.
Benfica Monitoring Ruben Amorim Situation
Interestingly, Amorim may yet have an escape route.
Reports in Portugal claim that Benfica presidential candidate Joao Noronha Lopes is considering bringing him back to Lisbon if he wins October’s election.
Amorim, who won three league titles as a player at Benfica, remains highly regarded in his homeland despite his rocky spell at Old Trafford.
Lopes is said to be a big admirer, though current boss Bruno Lage remains in charge for now.
So, will United sack Amorim? The board insist he is safe for now, but pressure is rising.
With City and Chelsea looming after Burnley, results in the next three fixtures could define his Manchester United future.
