Wolves Considering Shock Managerial Change In ‘Desperate’ Last Survival Bid

Gary o'neil wolves

Wolves are considering re-appointing former boss Gary O’Neil in a final attempt to escape Premier League relegation.

It’s been a disastrous season for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Rooted to the foot of the Premier League, they have taken just two points all season.

With Wolves set to be the worst Premier League team ever, the appointment of Rob Edwards has failed to stop the rot.

Edwards signed a three-year deal in November, but has failed to win a league game.

His side are on an 11-game losing streak heading into Tuesday’s trip to Manchester United.

Another loss at Old Trafford would only add to Wolves’ misery, and raise further questions over Edwards’ ability.

There may be no manager that can help Wolves survive this Premier League relegation battle.

But in one man, they might just be able to salvage some dignity.

Wolves Considering Appointing Gary O’Neil Again

Following a dreadful start last season, Wolves sacked Gary O’Neil.

He was replaced by Vitor Pereira, who kept them up after a 1-0 win at Manchester United earned them survival.

Few have hope that Rob Edwards can achieve the same result this season.

Pereira was sacked in November, but with no improvement under Edwards, O’Neil’s name has resurfaced.

The Molineux club held talks with their former boss over a return before they appointed Edwards, but O’Neil turned down the job.

Now, though, Wolves are thought to have renewed their interest in the 42-year-old coach.

O’Neil was linked to Southampton and Leeds since leaving Wolves, but remains out of work currently.

It would be a bold move for Wolves to sack Edwards and re-appoint O’Neil.

And even if they do, it’s unlikely to make a difference at this stage

Can Anyone Keep Wolves From Relegation?

It would be an almighty admission of failure from Wolves to re-appoint a manager they sacked barely a year ago.

O’Neil was a popular figure at Wolves. But he left with the team 19th in the table, having picked up just nine points from 16 games.

This time around, things are even worse. Two points from 18 games leaves them a full 16 from safety – less than halfway through the season.

The one positive is that there’s 20 games to go and easily enough points on offer.

But it’s hard to see how any manager on earth could keep this set of players up.

Wolves simply lack the quality to retain their Premier League status.

But in Gary O’Neil, they could appoint a popular manager that know the club, and one that would help them rebuild and go again in the Championship.

At any rate, it can’t possibly get much worse for them.
