RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande Could Be Europe’s Next Elite Dribbler

Yan Diomande is rapidly emerging as one of Europe’s most exciting teenage wingers. He’s the sort of player who makes you straighten up on the sofa because something might happen.

At just 19, the RB Leipzig attacker is already turning heads across the Bundesliga with his blistering pace, two-footed dribbling and rare ability to progress the ball in tight spaces.

Who Is Yan Diomande?

Diomande’s rise has been anything but conventional. The Ivorian spent his early development years at DME Academy in Florida before earning a move to Leganes in late 2024.

After breaking into their first team, he produced three goal contributions in 10 La Liga appearances, which is impressive output for a teenager adapting to European football.

RB Leipzig, never shy about hoovering up high-ceiling attackers, saw his potential and signed him up for around €20 million in the summer.

Despite limited minutes so far, his skillset has already made him one of the Bundesliga’s most watchable young wide players.

If you take one thing away from a Yan Diomande scouting session – other than, “wow, he’s quick” – it’s that he’s already an elite dribbler for his age.

The numbers back it up. He’s near the top of the Bundesliga for carries that lead to shots and chances, and across the big five leagues he sits in the 98th percentile for progressive carries, final-third entries and penalty-area carries (FBref). That’s not normal.

He is also equally comfortable using either foot, making him unpredictable and difficult to defend 1v1.

Diomande’s combination of balance, acceleration and strength allows him to beat markers in different phases of play – whether he’s operating deeper in buildup or attacking full-backs near the box.

And for a teenager, his ability to withstand contact is particularly rare.

Yan Diomande Creativity

Being a high-volume dribbler only matters if a player can make the right decisions after beating his man. Early signs suggest Diomande has the bones of a reliable playmaker.

During long progressive carries, he regularly spots teammates breaking into space. His simple square passes are well-weighted, allowing for quick combination play in the final third.

Most of his chance creation so far comes from lateral passes in and around the box rather than throughballs or cut-backs. Those bits can still come later; the foundation is there.

Yan Diomande Weaknesses

If there’s a concern – and it’s more ‘room for growth’ than ‘alarms going off’ – it’s his off-ball movement.

Out of possession, he’s fine: committed in the press, tracks runners and follows Leipzig’s counterpressing principles well – the work ethic is there.

In attack, though, he can be oddly static. He often stays wide instead of attacking the box, rarely makes underlapping runs, and doesn’t consistently attack the back post during crossing sequences.

It all limits his shot volume and ability to add goals through intelligent movement rather than just transition opportunities.

Fix this, and his numbers could rocket.

Yan Diomande vs Jeremy Doku

There are clear parallels between Yan Diomande and a young Jeremy Doku.

Both players possessed explosive first steps as teenagers, they were dynamic dribblers capable of bursting past defenders off either foot, and they relied heavily on 1v1 situations to drive their team’s attacks.

But there are distinctions. Diomande is physically stronger than Doku was at the same age, while Doku showed more instinctive off-ball intent, especially with his runs toward the back post.

Doku’s crossing ability was also more refined during his early years, whereas Diomande might actually be the faster runner over longer distances.

Whether Diomande can eventually reach the creative level that Doku has reached at Manchester City remains uncertain.

The talent’s there, but the decision-making and off-ball participation need to level up first.

How High Is Yan Diomande’s Ceiling?

Diomande’s ceiling is high – extremely high – but he is still raw.

If he stays as a pure 1v1 winger who relies almost entirely on dribbling, his long-term impact may sit just below Europe’s elite wide players.

But if he develops stronger movement patterns and box-attacking instincts and starts to stitch chances together with consistency, the future looks very bright. Then he has everything required to become one of Europe’s most terrifying ball-carrying wingers.

At 19, with elite dribbling output and two-footed unpredictability, he has already shown more than most players his age.

With the right refinement, he could become one of the Bundesliga’s next breakout stars.
