Edwin van der Sar, the goalkeeper who will be remembered by the United faithful for years to come, as being the keeper who won them the UEFA Champions League for the second time under Ferguson’s reign, has spoken about his confidence that the team can retain both cups. Edwin played a crucial part in the historic 2007/08 Double, and is determined to carry forward the team’s success to 2008/09. There will obviously be more pressure on United to perform well, even from their own fans which will be expectant more than ever for United to dominate matches. And this situation was worsened as the club did not bring new faces this summer, in a busy transfer season for their title rivals.
Van der Sar believes that even if Ronaldo had to leave the club, which he certainly won’t this summer, the team would still be a contender for all competitions. He stated that luck must also be on their side when the team suffers dips in form, injuries, suspensions and match fatigue. But the 37-year old assured all fans that the team will continue its excellent 2007/08 form and make them proud to be Red Devils fans.
“The core of the team is still the same. Of course, we had a little thing with Ronaldo this summer but we have a good squad of players. During the season we are bound to suffer setbacks, every team does.”
“There will be injuries, loss of form, red cards and clearly we need luck at crucial times as well. But hopefully we will end up in the right place.” – Edwin van der Sar
