Rooney Fit For Newcastle? Carrick To Play In Wembley Opener?

Manchester United fans may have breathed a collective sigh of relief when rumours began to circulate that Wayne Rooney will indeed be fit for the start of the season, fighting off a virus quicker than expected.

United’s number 10 had picked up the illness in Nigeria, during Manchester United’s successful pre-season tour in Africa. However, he is now back in training, and Sir Alex Ferguson is optimistic.

Sir Alex told the official club website: “We have a big job to get him ready for Newcastle, but with seven or eight days training, we may just make it now. He’s much better and the medical reports are good.”

There was more good news, as Michael Carrick will be able to play a part in Sunday’s Community Shield face-off with Portsmouth at Wembley.

Carrick

“Carrick trained yesterday for the first time and I’m taking him to Wembley” said the Scotsman.
“Hopefully I’ll give him some minutes on the pitch. If he is feeling good then we have to get some minutes on the clock for him ahead of next week against Newcastle.”
