FC Barcelona have taken the unusual step of issuing a press release to deny a story from Catalan television station TV3 that said that Joan Laporta had given his blessing to Pep Guardiola taking over from Frank Rijkaard at the end of the season. The story was then run by both El Sport and El Mundo Deportivo which caused Barça to issue the press release.
The following statement has been issued by FC Barcelona concerning the future of coach Frank Rijkaard: “FC Barcelona emphatically denies that a decision has been taken to replace the football coach, Frank Rijkaard, for the next season. The Dutch manager has a contract until the 2009 season and the Board of Directors has complete confidence in himâ€.
