“Unstoppable” Erling Haaland Primed for World Cup Debut as Norway Look Set to End 28-Year Absence

Erling Haaland once again underlined his status as the most fearsome striker in world football on Tuesday night by scoring five times in Norway’s astonishing 11-1 demolition of Moldova.

The Manchester City superstar, playing with stitches in his face after colliding with a bus door less than 24 hours earlier, was in no mood for sympathy. He scored in the 11th, 36th, 43rd, 51st and 83rd minutes in Oslo to take his international tally to a scarcely believable 48 goals in 45 appearances.

For context, Cristiano Ronaldo had managed just 15 goals for Portugal after his first 45 caps, while Robert Lewandowski stood on 13 at the same point for Poland. Haaland has already smashed Norway’s all-time scoring record – previously set by Jorgen Juve with 33 goals – despite being only 25 years old.

This was his first five-goal haul at international level, though he had previously hit five in a game for City against RB Leipzig in the Champions League and against Luton in the FA Cup.

Thelo Aasgaard remarkably struck four goals off the bench on Tuesday, but even that was overshadowed by Haaland’s latest show of ruthlessness.

Fans react to Erling Haaland’s five-goal haul vs Moldova

The internet erupted as supporters tried to put the performance into words.

One fan described Haaland as “simply unstoppable”. Another declared: “I’m sorry but Erling Haaland is going to retire as the best striker in football history.”

A third wrote: “We’re finally going to see Haaland at the World Cup.”

Will Erling Haaland play at the 2026 World Cup?

After years of near misses, it is looking increasingly likely that Haaland will finally get his chance on the biggest stage.

Norway’s thumping win over Moldova made it five wins from five in their World Cup qualifying group, with a goal difference of +21.

They sit six points clear of second-placed Italy, who beat Israel 5-4 in another bizarre game on Tuesday and have played one match fewer.

The key result so far came in June, when Norway beat Italy 3-0 in Oslo. With head-to-head records the first tie-breaker in UEFA qualifying, that victory makes Stale Solbakken’s side strong favourites to finish top of Group I and qualify directly.

Should they slip to second, a play-off against another European nation awaits.

Has Haaland ever played at a World Cup before?

Haaland scored three goals in four appearances at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, but he has yet to play at a major tournament at international level.

Therefore, providing he stays fit and Norway secure qualification, 2026 will see Haaland make his World Cup debut.

Norway have previously only qualified for a World Cup on three occasions, in 1938, 1994 and most recently 1998.

Joining the party in 2026 would see the Scandinavian nation end a 28-year absence from the biggest tournament in world football.

Will Haaland be the biggest star at the 2026 World Cup?

For well over a decade, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been the defining names of every World Cup. Messi led Argentina to glory in Qatar in 2022, while Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record-breaking captain.

But 2026 could be the tournament where a new generation takes centre stage.

Messi will turn 39 next summer. He recently admitted, after what was likely his final home appearance for Argentina, that “the most logical thing is that I won’t make it” to the World Cup, though he remains motivated to try.

Ronaldo, who will be 41 next year, is expected to captain Portugal at the tournament, but is well past his prime.

That opens the door for a changing of the guard. Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham are among the next generation of superstars ready to claim the global spotlight.

Haaland, though, looks best placed to seize it. No other striker in the world combines his numbers with his aura.

Norway’s rising golden generation

Haaland is not the only star man in the current Norway team.

Martin Odegaard is blossoming into one of Europe’s most influential playmakers at Arsenal, while Rangers midfielder Aasgaard, Man City youngster Oscar Bobb and teenage winger Antonio Nusa offer further firepower.

For a nation long starved of tournament football, the blend of world-class talent and youthful exuberance has supporters daring to dream that Norway can do more than simply qualify.

What makes Haaland so unstoppable?

Haaland’s sheer numbers – 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund before joining City, followed by 88 in his first 100 Premier League games – speak for themselves. But statistics alone don’t explain why he is so prolific.

Analysts point out that it is not just Haaland’s finishing that sets him apart. Sergio Aguero, the man he succeeded at City, was technically a better finisher in terms of shot conversion. The difference is that Haaland consistently engineers higher-quality chances through a combination of raw pace, strength, movement and anticipation.

Defenders simply cannot cope with his blend of size and speed. His runs into space create chaos, while his reflexes inside the box allow him to profit from half-chances that most strikers would not even sniff out.
