Scott McTominay enjoyed the fruits of his incredible season last term after he placed at this year’s Ballon d’Or standings.
The midfielder was the standout for Napoli last season in what was an incredible campaign for the Serie A giants who lifted the Scudetto in front of their own fans on the final day.
McTominay was key as The Blues finished top of the division by just the one point ahead of Inter Milan who pushed their title rivals hard until they could not push further.
The Scotland international, 28, smashed in 13 goals in all competitions while providing six assists in the same number of matches which amounted to a total of 39 for the club.
It was the player’s leadership which shone through alongside his talents and capabilities on the pitch with McTominay often coming up with massive goals at vital moments for the team.
Scott McTominay finished 18th in 2024/5 Ballon d’Or
And he was rewarded for his efforts and the success of his club with a spot on the Ballon d’Or shortlist alongside the world’s best footballers.
McTominay actually became the first Scot to be nominated among the group of elites since Ally McCoist was up for the gong all the way back in 1987.
As the evening in Monaco unfolded, Ousmane Dembele won the Ballon d’Or trophy for 2024/5 as he beat out the likes of Lamine Yamal and Mo Salah to win the prize.
England’s talent were also among the Ballon d’Or list but McTominay beat out both Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in 27th and 23rd respectively.
McTominay ended the evening in 18th which can be considered a terrific achievement as he narrowly edged out Inter’s Lautaro Martinez as individual wins mirrored their league title race.
Who said McTominay ‘not good enough’ for Manchester United
Of course it all comes after the Scot swapped Old Trafford and Manchester United for what was an ambitious and left-field switch to Italian football.
McTominay has gone from strength to strength at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium while Ruben Amorim faces the sack at United for dreadful results and performances over the course of two seasons.
‘McSauce’ as he is affectionately known by the Tartan Army was deemed not good enough to play regularly for the Red Devils by former club captain Roy Keane on Sky Sports duties.
Following a home defeat to Brighton back in 2022, Keane said: “Not good enough – giving away poor goals. But credit to Brighton, they were outstanding.
“Fred and McTominay are not good enough. They won’t get Manchester United back competing.
“We see it week in, week out. Not up to it.”
