Who Is Dastan Satpayev? Meet Future Chelsea Star Set to Become Premier League’s First Kazakhstani Player

Seventeen-year-old striker Dastan Satpayev steps onto Europe’s biggest stage this week as FC Kairat host Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The Chelsea-bound forward is on course to become the Premier League’s first Kazakhstani player when he completes his move to Stamford Bridge next summer.

Therefore, Blues fans will be keen to catch an early glimpse of the talented teenager in what looks on paper to be the Champions League’s ultimate David vs Goliath clash.

But who is Dastan Satpayev?

Who is Dastan Satpayev?

Satpayev is a centre-forward for Kairat Almaty and a senior international for Kazakhstan. Chelsea finalised a deal in February, with a transfer fee around £4 million widely reported, for him to join after his 18th birthday.

He rose through Kairat’s academy at speed, captained national youth sides, and broke into the first team as a mid-teen. Coaches praise his attitude and focus, while teammates highlight his maturity off the ball and a knack for finding space in tight areas.

Dastan Satpayev profile

  • Age: 17
  • Height: 1.76 m (5 ft 9 in)
  • Position: Striker (centre-forward)
  • Club: Kairat Almaty (joins Chelsea in 2026)
  • National team: Kazakhstan (six senior caps)

Dastan Satpayev’s style of play

Satpayev is a mobile No 9 with a low centre of gravity, sharp acceleration and excellent balance. He combines quick one-twos around the box with neat hold-up play, then bursts into the area to finish. Comparisons to Sergio Aguero stem from his body shape, timing and ability to create a shooting lane with minimal backlift.

He is stronger on the deck than in the air at this stage, but his movement is intelligent: he peels off the back shoulder, attacks the near post aggressively and links play with clean passes. Out of possession he presses willingly and reads loose touches well for turnovers.

How did Dastan Satpayev make his name in Kazakhstan?

Kairat fast-tracked him after prolific returns in the QJ League — Kazakhstan’s youth football league — where he posted eye-catching goals and assists across the 2023 and 2024 academy seasons.

He became Kairat’s youngest-ever debutant at 15 in a League Cup tie, then graduated to the senior squad on a full-time basis in the 2024/25 season, taking the No 9 shirt in the process.

Local scouts and coaches talk as much about his work ethic as his talent. Stories of extra gym sessions and late finishing drills are common. One coach even claimed they occasionally had to tell him to stop to protect his recovery.

How Chelsea spotted Dastan Satpayev

Satpayev stood out at multiple international youth tournaments — including the Helvetia Cup in Switzerland — and then impressed during a brief spell training at Cobham.

In a behind-closed-doors under-21 friendly he scored a hat-trick and added an assist. Recruitment chief Joe Shields helped drive the deal, with Chelsea beating competition from multiple European clubs.

Satpayev has said he chose Chelsea because the club showed the most sustained interest and offers clear development pathways for young players.

He is not the only Champions League wonderkid to have agreed a future move to Chelsea. Geovany Quenda, currently with Sporting Lisbon, is also set to land at Stamford Bridge next summer.

Dastan Satpayev’s Champions League adventure

Satpayev’s European campaign started with a bang. In July, he scored in a 1-1 draw away to Olimpija Ljubljana, becoming the second-youngest goalscorer in Champions League qualifying history (16 years, 10 months, 26 days) and the youngest since Nicklas Barkroth in 2008. Kairat then finished the job a week later, winning 2-0 in Almaty.

Next came KuPS. Kairat lost the first leg 2-0 in Finland on July 22, but Satpayev led the turnaround in the return, scoring in a 3-0 home win to seal a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Against Slovan Bratislava, he converted a stoppage-time penalty to win the first leg 1-0 in early August. Slovan levelled the tie with a 1-0 victory in the return game, but Kairat held their nerve in the shootout to progress.

The play-off with Celtic was cagey. It was 0-0 in Glasgow, with Satpayev playing the full 90 minutes, and then 0-0 again in Almaty. Kairat eventually progressed after another penalty shootout to reach the league phase.

This week’s Real Madrid game will be Satpayev’s second outing in the Champions League proper, after Kairat’s opening 4-1 defeat away to Sporting on 18 September. Their league phase campaign will conclude in January with a clash with Premier League opposition in Arsenal.

What has been said about Dastan Satpayev?

Kazakh scout Olzhas, who has tracked Satpayev since he was 15, believes Chelsea have landed a gem. “Chelsea really hit the jackpot here,” Olzhas told The Sun. He also called Satpayev “the most gifted footballer from Kazakhstan since independence,” recalling an extraordinary U17 campaign in which Kairat posted a 186-0 goal difference and Satpayev produced 54 goals with 50 assists in just 19 matches.

Meanwhile, Kairat manager Rafael Urazbakhtin has praised the teenager’s relentlessness: “We had to forbid him from training. He was always sneaking out into the gym or back on to the pitches after sessions,” he told BBC Sport, adding that the staff had to step in “to make sure he understood the importance of recovery.”

What has Dastan Satpayev said himself?

On his behind-closed-doors trial at Cobham, Satpayev said: “We played one game, but in the first half we faced one team, and in the second half it was already another. You could say it felt like two short matches against different opponents. At first, the ball just wasn’t going our way, but once we took control of the game, chances started to appear. In the end, I managed to score three goals and provide one assist across those two halves.”

Explaining why he chose the Blues amid rival interest from Zenit, Real Sociedad, Benfica, Salzburg and Marseille, he told The Sun: “Chelsea paid the most attention out of all these clubs, so I chose them.”

He added: “Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s the best option, but I think Chelsea knows how to work with young players. The club really invests in them. Even if it comes to a loan, they can find a good club for me. Of course, I’ll try to establish myself in the first team at Chelsea and become a leader there.”

Setting out his ambitions, Satpayev said: “My favorite player at the moment is Lamine Yamal. I’d love to compete with him in the future.”

Satpayev also said: “God willing, my ambition is to become a professional football player who is competitive at the European level, to show that Kazakhstan also has many talented players, and never to stop after what I’ve already achieved. I want to never give up, continue working hard and reach my goals.”

While Satpayev is destined for bigger things, he remains grateful for Kairat’s support. He said: “Kairat greatly supported me with its infrastructure, coaches and player development approach,” he explained. “It also helped me become mentally strong, stay focused, and embrace hard work from an early age.”
