Paul Scholes has hinted that Rangers have spoken to one of his former Manchester United teammates about their managerial vacancy.
The Light Blues are on the hunt for their new boss following the sacking of Russell Martin after a miserable start to the new season.
Martin broke unwanted records at Ibrox and left the club sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership with just eight points from their opening seven fixtures.
Martin also fell out with key players including Nico Raskin and his style of play was questioned by fans who were unhappy with his naivety and inability to change his system when it was not working.
The Gers board and 49ers ownership group are now focused fully on finding his replacement with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat named among the possible options.
There are, of course, others on the shortlist with Kevin Thelwell, the sporting director, leading the search.
Rangers’ next manager could be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has been linked with Rangers and his stats as a manager are not half bad.
But now it has emerged that Old Trafford icon Scholes has seemingly spoken with a gaffer who was approached by Rangers – hinting it may have been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Speaking to former teammate Nicky Butt and Paddy McGuinness on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes was coy but clear.
“I was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers in London, his name has not been mentioned,” he said.
“I don’t think he was going for it. They contacted him, and he was going to meet them in London.
Butt then queried: “Oh, I know who you mean, he managed Man United, didn’t he? He scored the winner in the Champions League final, didn’t he? Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], you’re talking about, aren’t you?”
Scholes smiled and added: “No comment.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial record
Solskjaer has experience of managing at the highest level with Manchester United having taken the club to the Europa League Final in 2021 only to narrowly lose out to Villarreal.
He held a win percentage of 54 percent at United following his time with Molde where he has played and beaten rivals Celtic.
Solskjaer has since worked with Besiktas in Turkish football where he took charge of just 29 matches and won 15 of those fixtures.
The 52-year-old was relieved of his duties back in August and is now on the lookout for a new gig which is where a move to Scotland could be a promising one.
