Premier League London Derby Table: Where Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea Rank Since 1992

A photo taken outside Arsenal's Emirates Stadium

Sunday’s game between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will be the 920th London derby in Premier League history, but which club has the best record when it comes to all-capital clashes?

To answer that question, FootballBlog.co.uk has created the Premier League London derby table.

Like the all-time Premier League table we shared recently, it factors in all results since the Premier League began in 1992 but with a twist – we are only counting matches where two London teams played against each other.

How many London clubs have played in the Premier League?

A total of 10 clubs from London have competed in the Premier League. They include three who have featured in every Premier League season to date, in Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

There are a further four London clubs currently in England’s top flight, in West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford, while Charlton Athletic, Queens Park Rangers and Wimbledon complete the list.

Wimbledon refers to Wimbledon FC, rather than AFC Wimbledon. Wimbledon FC were founder members of the Premier League in 1992 and competed in eight consecutive seasons before being relegated in 2000. The club was later moved out of London and rebranded as Milton Keynes Dons in 2004. MK Dons renounced any claim to the history of Wimbledon FC in 2007.

Arsenal boast best London derby record in Premier League history

Arsenal have won more games and earned more points against London opposition than any other club in Premier League history. That record is safe regardless of what happens against Tottenham on Sunday.

The Gunners have also scored more London derby goals than any other Premier League team, netting 558 times in 315 games.

London derby goals in the Premier League

  1. Arsenal — 558 goals
  2. Chelsea — 519 goals
  3. Tottenham — 425 goals
  4. West Ham — 323 goals
  5. Fulham — 180 goals
  6. Crystal Palace — 168 goals
  7. Charlton — 90 goals
  8. Wimbledon FC — 80 goals
  9. Brentford — 67 goals
  10. QPR — 66 goals

Brentford above West Ham, Fulham and Crystal Palace based on points per game

Fulham may be fifth in the all-time Premier League London derby table based on points, but they are dead last when it comes to points per game.

Conversely, Brentford are dead last in the regular table, but only Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs have a superior points per game record in Premier League London derbies.

Brentford are also fourth when it comes to goal difference. The Bees have scored 67 goals in Premier League derbies and conceded 67. Their goal difference of zero is only three below Tottenham’s.

Chelsea ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham in London mini-league

Arsenal have scored more goals, won more games and earned more points in Premier League London derbies than any other capital club.

However, if you were to make a mini-league based solely on the results of derbies between the Premier League’s three ever-present London clubs, then the Gunners would be behind Chelsea.

MP W D L GD Pts PPG
1. Chelsea 133 58 40 35 51 214 1.61
2. Arsenal 132 54 43 35 34 205 1.55
3. Spurs 133 23 45 65 -85 114 0.86

Looking at the mini-league table above you might assume that Chelsea have a winning head-to-head record against Arsenal, but that is not the case. Arsenal have actually earned 100 Premier League points against Chelsea, who have themselves taken just 79.

The reason Chelsea are top here is largely down to their emphatically dominant record against Tottenham. Chelsea have beaten Spurs 38 times in the Premier League, while suffering only eight losses. Chelsea average 2.01 points per game against Spurs, whose average in the fixture is 0.67.

Spurs have been much more competitive in North London derbies, taking 1.05 points per game, while limiting Arsenal to 1.59 on average.

But Tottenham’s recent record against the Gunners is much worse than their all-time Premier League average. Since the start of the 2022/23 season, Spurs have taken just one point from a possible 18 against Arsenal.

That record — coupled with the fact that Arsenal are flying high at the top of the table — means that Spurs will go into Sunday’s North London derby as heavy underdogs.

But Arsenal have an awful recent record without defender Gabriel, who looks set to miss this weekend’s game with a thigh injury.

Whoever prevails on Sunday, Arsenal are guaranteed to end the weekend top of the all-time Premier League London derby table, as well as the actual Premier League table.
