Manchester United’s academy has consistently been the source for the club’s most successful teams and promising talents have often provided some hope amongst the fanbase when times are tough. But right now, it is not providing the optimism that many fans are craving.
In fact, Carrington graduates have played more minutes AGAINST Manchester United in the Premier League this season than Carrington graduates have played FOR Manchester United.
With the club’s integration of youth talent being a firm part of their identity, this is a stat that no doubt will worry many fans, but what has caused this?
The Manchester United academy stat that will concern fans
In the 2025/26 Premier League season, Manchester United academy graduates have played a total of 360 minutes against their boyhood club, while Kobbie Mainoo’s 224 minutes are the only playing time academy graduates still at the club have had after 12 games.

|---|---|---|---|
| Player | Club | Minutes played vs Manchester United (Including added time) | Date |
| Hannibal Mejbri | Burnley | 65 | 30/08/25 |
| Danny Welbeck | Brighton | 99 | 25/10/25 |
| Michael Keane | Everton | 98 | 24/11/25 |
| James Garner | Everton | 98 | 24/11/25 |
Why are Manchester United academy graduates not getting regular minutes?
Following the departures of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford this summer, Kobbie Mainoo remains the only senior academy graduate who has a realistic chance of collecting meaningful minutes. The midfielder has not seen as much game time under Ruben Amorim than he had under his predecessor Erik ten Hag, which saw him linked to a move to Napoli in the summer.
And the lack of minutes have continued into this season with Mainoo’s only start coming in the embarrassing defeat to Grimsby Town in the League Cup Second Round.

|---|---|
| Opponent | Minutes played (including stoppage time) |
| Burnley | 56 |
| Manchester City | 32 |
| Chelsea | 10 |
| Brentford | 32 |
| Sunderland | 18 |
| Liverpool | 13 |
| Brighton | 27 |
| Everton | 36 |
Though there has been much clamour from Manchester United fans for Mainoo to be given more starts, he has not made enough of an impact when appearing off the bench to give a convincing argument that he deserves more minutes.
Will other academy prospects get minutes this season?
The club’s failure to secure European qualification last season, coupled with their early exit in the League Cup in August, has meant that the club will not play as many games this season, therefore limiting the chances that academy graduates will make their debut this season.
However, with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo among the Premier League stars Premier League stars destined for the Africa Cup of Nations just before Christmas, Amorim may turn to academy star Shea Lacey to help fill the void. The 18-year-old is said to be highly regarded by Amorim, and he was even on the bench in Monday night’s defeat to Everton.
