Manchester United have been linked with a shock move for Sergio Ramos – but here’s why they should avoid that deal.
With the January transfer window looming, Manchester United are once again being rumoured as a destination for legendary Spanish defender Sergio Ramos.
The 39-year-old has been linked to Old Trafford throughout his career, with a move never quite materialising.
But with him departing CF Monterrey, reports have indicated he is set to return to Europe.
And now Spanish media outlets claim Manchester United have “made an offer” to bring him to the club in January.
But while Ramos is one of the most decorated players in football history, United should be wary of signing yet another superstar on the decline.
The club should focus on bringing in exciting young talent, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens’ recent success an example of their good business under Amorim.
Manchester United Linked With Sergio Ramos Once Again
Ramos joining Manchester United has been on the cards for more than a decade.
In 2023, when discussing how close he was to a move, Ramos said: “I stayed where I should have stayed, Real Madrid, but I was indeed close to playing for United.
“It was not to be, but I do keep that admiration for the club, to the Premier League and the players.
“Because the rhythm of play, the pace is different, and it’s a league we can all learn a great deal from, all of us.”

A serial winner, Ramos has 180 caps for Spain, lifting the 2010 World Cup in between back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
On the domestic front, he is a five-time La Liga winner with Real Madrid and two-time Ligue 1 champion while at PSG.
He has won four Champions League titles, and countless individual awards.
But at 39 years old, he is well past the peak of his career.
Despite this, Ramos still harbours ambitions of a final World Cup appearance with Spain at next summer’s tournament.
As a result, a short-term move to the Premier League has been rumoured.
However, there are a catalogue of reasons United should steer clear of the veteran defender.
Why Manchester United Shouldn’t Sign Sergio Ramos
Age Profile and Physical Demands Make Ramos a Risk
Ramos is, undeniably, one of the greatest defenders of his era.
His 16-year spell at Real Madrid brought incredible success, and he remains the most-capped man in Spanish football history.
But the Ramos of a decade ago is not the Ramos of today.
At 39 years old, turning 40 in March 2026, he is firmly in the twilight of his career.
The Premier League is gruelling and intensely physical, even for players in their prime.
Ramos’ experience and aura are unmatched, but United have a woeful track record with signing older players.
Bringing in another fading star seems like a step in the wrong direction, and completely at odds with the club’s recent transfer policy.
A Block to Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven
If the club under INEOS and Ruben Amorim have made one thing clear, it’s their commitment to younger profiles.
Manchester United suffered a January Transfer blow this week when midfield target Ayyoub Bouaddi signed a new contract at Ligue 1 side Lille.
But their move in a more youthful direction is evidenced by the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, two centre-backs signed to develop into long-term pillars of the club.
Recruiting a 39-year-old Ramos, even as a short-term option, immediately disrupts that pathway.
Yoro is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top young defenders. He needs minutes and an unbroken run in the team, as well as the responsibility of backing up performances week-on-week.

And Heaven, who is further down the pecking order, would almost certainly be pushed out entirely by the arrival of Ramos.
Ramos, by nature, is a commanding presence who demands to play.
That is by no means a flaw, and has been part of what’s made him a generational talent.
But it would also inevitably reduce the playing time of two bright young talents that United should be prioritising.
A short-term sticking plaster causing long-term harm has been a recurring problem for the club in the post-Ferguson era.
The Warning From Past Short-Term Fixes
United’s recent history is littered with late-career signings that didn’t pay off.
Cavani, Varane, Schweinsteiger, Ronaldo (second stint), and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all came to the club as veterans.
There were of course bright moments, and not all of those signings can be deemed failures.
But none offered a long-term solution, while the profile and ego of such big names created headlines and unnecessary noise.
Ramos would be yet another of these signings, at a time where United are trying to lower their age profile.
With Harry Maguire already 32 and Casemiro 33, the last thing Amorim needs is another ageing player in a key defensive role.
When Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign Ramos in 2015, it was a no-brainer. He was one of the world’s best.
But the time for that move has passed. United must stay committed to their future, not drawn-in by a superstar name from the past.
