Will Kylian Mbappe Play in the Supercopa de Espana?

Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid

Real Madrid begin their Supercopa de Espana campaign with a clash against Atletico Madrid on Thursday night.

However, they may have to face their noisy neighbours without their talisman, Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe was diagnosed with a sprain in his left knee on New Year’s Eve. It was initially seen as a minor issue, but the Frenchman could not recover in time for the first LaLiga match of 2026, against Real Betis.

The knee issue also caused him to miss the Champions League match against Manchester City on 10th December. Until Monday, it was the only game Mbappe had missed in the 2025/26 season.

Los Blancos did not miss Mbappe against Betis, as Gonzalo Garcia fired a hat-trick to secure a 5-1 victory. However, they are set to face a much stiffer test in Saudi Arabia, when they take on Atletico Madrid in the second semi-final.

Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao will compete in the first semi-final on Wednesday.

Real Madrid Star Kylian Mbappe a Major Doubt for Supercopa de Espana

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Kylian Mbappe trained in the gym on Monday.

Real Madrid did not rule Mbappe out of the Supercopa de Espana after Monday’s session, as they are hoping to see him back on the pitch on Tuesday morning.

While the club has not yet confirmed anything, AS sources claim they have ruled Mbappe out for Thursday’s clash with Atletico Madrid. The club are now waiting to see if he manages to pass the fitness test for a potential final on Sunday.

The ex-Monaco has by far been the most prolific player for Madrid this season, scoring 29 goals for the club in all competitions. Mbappe outscored Harry Kane and Erling Haaland in 2025 and equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record tally of 59 goals in a calendar year for Real Madrid.

Mbappe Fitness Record at Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe joined Real Madrid at the start of the 2024/25 season. He has since missed only 11 games of a possible 94. The former Paris Saint-Germain star has never missed two consecutive LaLiga matches due to an injury.

However, if he does not make the cut for the game on Thursday, it would be the second Madrid Derby Mbappe would have missed since moving in 2024 (the first in September 2024).

Mbappe was on the scoresheet in Real Madrid’s first meeting with Atletico earlier this season. He equalised for Los Blancos in the 25th minute before Arda Guler made it 2-1.

However, Los Rojiblancos were unfazed and mounted a spectacular comeback to register a 5-2 victory at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Dean Huijsen to Play a Part

Real Madrid got some good news during Monday’s training. While Mbappe continued gym work, Dean Huijsen completed a full session with his teammates.

Los Merengues have had to deal with several absentees this season, but Huijsen’s return slightly eases the pressure on Alonso.
