Real Madrid Move Leaves Barcelona Coach Hansi Flick Without Requested Centre-Back

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez

Real Madrid are reportedly leading the race to sign Nico Schlotterbeck, a player Hansi Flick considers fundamental for the future of his Barcelona project.

Schlotterbeck, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, sees his contract expire in June 2027. He has decided against renewing his contract and has thus become a lucrative option for several European clubs.

Barcelona Suffer Blow As Real Madrid Move Closer to Schlotterbeck

Barcelona have long been in the market for a left-footed centre-back, with coach Hansi Flick specifically asking for a player of this profile.

According to Catalan outlet El Nacional, Blaugrana had identified German defender Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential transfer target.

Considering the level of attention the 26-year-old had drawn, Barca always considered it to be a complex operation. However, they were banking on Flick to convince the player to move to Catalonia.

Real Madrid’s intervention has dealt a massive blow to Barcelona’s chances of signing the talented centre-back. Barca fear they cannot compete with the Whites on the economic front, and their project alone cannot persuade Schlotterbeck to move.

With the Schlotterbeck move faltering, Barcelona have been linked with a Bournemouth defender. The move is likely to be more financially viable for the Catalan side.

Schlotterbeck Inching Closer to Madrid

Schlotterbeck was initially excited by the prospect of linking up with former Germany coach Flick at Barcelona. However, the defender is attentive towards non-sporting factors as well.

Due to their financial struggles, Barcelona have had a hard time registering their new signings. Schlotterbeck does not want to be left in limbo after agreeing to a move.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, offer a much more stable project. Los Blancos have one of the strongest squads in the game, and president Florentino Perez has kept the club’s finances in top shape.

Xabi Alonso is one of the most sought-after young coaches in the world and is tasked with rejuvenating Real Madrid. To top it off, Madrid are in a position to offer him a much more lucrative contract than Barcelona can.

Considering everything, Schlotterbeck appears to be leaning towards a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

With Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba in the final few months of their career, Los Merengues need a centre-back to push their project forward. The Madrid hierarchy believes Schlotterbeck could form a strong pairing with Dean Huijsen or Eder Militao.

Borussia Dortmund are unwilling to sell the player for less than €50 million. Real Madrid are happy to meet the price tag and are not worried about agreeing personal terms with the defender.

Schlotterbeck joined Dortmund from Freiburg in July 2022. He has since played 142 games for the club, scoring seven goals and providing 18 assists.
