Ajay Tavares has been the subject of growing transfer talk in recent weeks.
The 16-year-old has yet to make his senior competitive debut for Norwich City, but he is already regarded as one of the most exciting teenage attackers in English football — and now one of Europe’s biggest clubs is pushing hard to sign him.
Barcelona want to sign Ajay Tavares
Barcelona are understood to be increasingly confident of reaching an agreement with Norwich City for the teenage winger.
The La Liga giants have stepped up their recruitment of elite youth prospects in recent seasons, and Tavares is seen as a player who could continue his development within their famous academy system at La Masia.
Talks have reportedly accelerated in January, with Barcelona keen to bring the youngster to Spain during the current transfer window if a deal can be finalised.
Philippe Clement, who was appointed as Norwich manager in November, has previously made it clear that the club would prefer to keep hold of their most promising academy players, but he has also acknowledged that interest from clubs of Barcelona’s stature can be difficult to resist.
RB Leipzig, Dortmund and Bayern Munich also keen
Barcelona are not the only major European club tracking Tavares’ progress.
RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have all been monitoring the winger in recent months, with several scouts impressed by both his physical development and his performances against older age groups.
Despite that competition, Barcelona are believed to be in pole position, having moved quickly to establish direct contact and outline a clear pathway through their youth teams towards Barcelona B.
Who is Ajay Tavares?
Born in England in December 2009, Ajay Lopes Tavares is a 16-year-old winger. He prefers to play on the left, but is right-footed and enjoys cutting inside. He has also been used as a central forward on multiple occasions.
One of the standout features of his game is his physical maturity. Despite being only 16, Tavares regularly competes against players two or even three years older, and he has also trained with Norwich’s first team during pre-season.
He made an unofficial senior appearance in a friendly against Dutch side Volendam last summer and has featured this season in both the FA Youth Cup and the Under-18 Premier League.
Tavares attracted wider attention after scoring a hat-trick in just 16 minutes for Norwich’s youth side against Malaga’s academy in a 6-0 win last year. News of that performance quickly spread across European scouting networks.

Will Ajay Tavares sign for Barcelona?
While English players are often unable to move abroad before turning 18, Tavares holds a European passport through his Portuguese heritage, meaning he is eligible to complete an international transfer.
That legal flexibility is a major factor in why clubs across Europe have been able to pursue him so aggressively.
Barcelona’s plan would reportedly involve integrating Tavares into their youth setup immediately, with the expectation that he could progress to their Under-19 side and then Barcelona B if his development continues on its current trajectory.
Norwich, meanwhile, would ideally like to keep him at Carrow Road and guide him towards a first-team breakthrough in the Championship, where he could potentially become the club’s youngest-ever senior player if he features this season.
For now, negotiations are ongoing, but momentum appears to be shifting in Barcelona’s favour.
Will Ajay Tavares play for England one day?
Tavares has already represented England at several youth levels and is currently part of the national Under-17 setup.
He has also previously featured for England’s Under-15 and Under-16 teams, with coaches at St George’s Park said to be highly impressed by both his technical quality and his attitude.
However, his dual nationality means he is also eligible to represent Portugal in the future, keeping his long-term international future open.
Many people close to the player believe that he has the potential to feature at the 2030 World Cup, which could be a 64-team tournament.
