Tottenham Chief Explains Quiet January and Hints at Big Summer Rebuild

Tottenham Hotspur’s technical director Johan Lange says the club have already drawn up plans for a busy summer transfer window.

Despite ongoing injury problems, Spurs added only Conor Gallagher, as well as youngsters James Wilson and Souza, during the winter window.

Lange has now explained why, while also setting expectations for significant movement ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Tottenham transfer plans for the summer window

Speaking to Tottenham’s official website, Lange made it clear that the club views the summer as the key period for squad building.

“The summer market is where eight or nine out of 10 players, they move clubs,” Lange said. “So we will go into the summer window with big ambitions of strengthening the team.

“We know there’ll be more movements, we know there’ll be more opportunities, so the plans are already drawn up.”

Lange confirmed that Tottenham already have a clear idea of both positions and player profiles they want to target, suggesting groundwork is well underway behind the scenes.

He doesn’t go into detail, but you’d have to assume a goalkeeper, a fullback, and a wide attacker will be among the list of targets.

With Liverpool interested in Micky van de Ven and rumours circulating around Christian Romero’s future, Spurs may be faced with a fight to keep hold of key assets too.

Why Tottenham had a quiet January transfer window

Tottenham’s lack of January signings raised eyebrows, particularly after injuries to Lucas Bergvall, Richarlison, and Pedro Porro. While serious, none are expected to be season-ending.

Thomas Frank has been hard done by all season in that regard – Tottenham have been the Premier League team most affected by injuries this campaign.

Lange admitted the club would have liked to do more business but said opportunities simply were not there.

“Could we have brought one or two more in this January window? We would have been delighted to do so, but that was not a possibility,” he explained.

He pointed to squad size limits and competition rules as key factors behind the decision to hold fire.

Champions League registration and PSR explained

Lange highlighted that regulations played a major role in Tottenham’s approach, despite the club being in a relatively strong financial position.

“There are some limitations to how many players you can have in a squad to register them,” he said. “But even though our financial situation under the rules are better than most clubs, and we have owners who are very willing to invest, it is important that we are under those rules.”

The technical director stressed that compliance with profit and sustainability regulations meant Tottenham could not simply sign players for the sake of it.

“It is important that we sign the right players. I think also Thomas has been quite clear on two players we wanted to bring in, but it wasn’t a lack of willingness for the club to make the investment to support the team,” he said.

Lange insisted Tottenham’s focus now is finishing the season as strongly as possible.

“We’re still in the Champions League. We want to, of course, be higher in the Premier League,” he said.

At the same time, he acknowledged that recruitment planning does not stop, even during the season.

“Myself and others will have our eyes already now directed towards the summer transfer window,” Lange concluded.
