Tottenham have been dealt another injury setback, with Lucas Bergvall set to face time on the sidelines.
Bergvall picked up an ankle problem during Tuesday night’s Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.
The 19-year-old was forced off midway through the second half in north London, adding to an already stretched Spurs squad.
Lucas Bergvall ankle injury latest
Bergvall suffered a high ankle sprain following a tackle in the 62nd minute against Dortmund.
The Sweden international tried to continue but was eventually replaced by Jun’ai Byfield, who came on for his senior debut.
Speaking after the 2-0 win, Thomas Frank confirmed the midfielder is still being assessed, with a clearer picture expected later in the week.
“It was a contact (injury), and they are assessing him now, so we will know more on Thursday,” Frank told TNT Sports.
High ankle sprains can often require longer recovery periods than standard ankle injuries, leaving Bergvall’s availability for upcoming fixtures in doubt.
Bergvall injury adds to Tottenham absentees
Bergvall’s setback is the latest in a frustrating spell that has seen his momentum derailed.
He missed three matches in November due to concussion and has also been absent recently for the Premier League draw at Brentford and the FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa.
Tottenham are already without several senior players.
James Maddison, Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, Ben Davies and Rodrigo Bentancur remain sidelined, while Joao Palhinha has missed the last two matches after picking up a knock in training.
They are the Premier League team most affected by injuries this season, with their absences combining to almost 1,000 days lost to injury.
Despite those issues, Spurs managed a convincing win over Dortmund.
Early goals from captain Cristian Romero and the recently returning Dominic Solanke put them in front before the visitors were reduced to ten men.
Spurs were able to see out the game comfortably, alleviating some of the pressure on Thomas Frank – for now.
Will Bergvall be back for Sweden’s WC Playoffs?
Beyond club matters, Bergvall will be anxious about his international prospects.
Sweden face Ukraine in a World Cup play-off semi-final on March 26, with a potential final scheduled five days later.
Bergvall’s national team manager and ex-Chelsea boss, Graham Potter, was spotted in attendance for the Dortmund game, watching alongside Dejan Kulusevski – an already sidelined Sweden star.
Potter will be hoping his midfielder will be available for the play-offs, but such will depend on how Bergvall responds to treatment over the next fortnight.
For now, Spurs will wait on further assessments, hoping the injury doesn’t rule him out for an extended spell.
