Dimitar Berbatov has spoken of his targets for the 2010/11 season. This season has seen a complete transformation of the striker, perceived to be somewhat lazy in the first two seasons at United. He has already scored 6 goals in the first 7 matches played this season, and has made up for Wayne Rooney’s drop in goalscoring form. Berbatov aims to entertain the supporters this season after receiving widespread criticism for his poor performances in 2008/09 and 2009/10.
Dimitar, who is 29 years old and turns 30 on the 30th January, aims to play regularly for United this term and help bring some trophies to Old Trafford. About entertaining the fans, he told ManUtd.com: “That’s my aim. You need to know when to slow it down, when to increase the tempo. Zidane was great at doing that. He knew what he could do with his touch and when a player is sure in himself, he can do great things.”
He also spoke of his enjoyment at playing in deeper position in training such as defence. He did not exclude dropping deeper as he turns older. Berbatov stated: “Many people start as strikers and then move to the midfield. My father was a striker and then he moved back to the defence. Maybe I’ll enjoy playing in the midfield when I’m 37.”
The targets for 2010/11 were clearly outlined when he said, “My first target is to stay clear of injury. I think that is the first target for everybody. Then you think about what you want to do in the season. Obviously you’d like to win everything, but it’s not easy, so you think about how you can help the team – score goals, make assists, as much as possible.”
