A Victory and a Draw

Pompey added another victory to their Pre-Season tour last night, with an emphatic victory against League Two new boys Bournemouth.

The action took place at Dean Court where three Pompey players were on the score sheet, Sulley Muntari, Jermain Defoe and new signing Peter Crouch.

It was the first game where the two England internationals were paired up, up front. However it was neither of them who scored first as Sulley Muntari broke the deadlock on the 23rd minute, poking the ball between trialist Shwan Jalal’s legs.

Pompey had to wait to double their advantage until the opening minutes of the second half. Pompey were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area, which Jermain Defoe stepped up to take. His shot cannoned off the Bournemouth wall and fell fortunately to the feet of Peter Crouch, who gladly tucked away his first goal for the club since his summer move from Liverpool.

The F.A Cup winners went further in front when Crouch connected to a Pedro Mendes corner, powering a header into the roof of the net. Jermain Defoe then got in on the action by shooting past the keeper, after being nicely placed in by Crouch.

Portsmouth did not have the game all their own way with Bournemouth putting up a mighty fight for most of the match. The Cherries got what they deserved with ten minutes left on the clock, when Brad Pitman tucked the ball into the back of the net, from a tight angle after escaping from Pompey captain Sol Campbell.
