Ousmane Dembele is officially the king of world football for 2025 after pipping Lamine Yamal to the Ballon d’Or this year – but who will take home the crown in 2026?
While the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or will depend greatly on what happens between now and the end of the 2025/26 season — not least the 2026 FIFA World Cup — an early favourite has already emerged.
According to the bookmakers, Barcelona and Spain wonderkid Yamal is the clear frontrunner. The 18-year-old was second in the 2025 vote and also claimed the Kopa Trophy for the second season running.
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is seen as the main challenger, while England duo Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham — who placed 13th and 23rd respectively this year — also feature prominently in the betting.

Who are the main contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or?
Lamine Yamal
The Barcelona teenager is tipped to go one better after finishing second in 2025. Already the most exciting out-and-out winger in world football, Yamal combines flair with productivity and will be central to Spain’s hopes at the World Cup in North America. If he inspires Barca to another deep Champions League run and adds another international trophy — having already won Euro 2024 — the award may be his by right.
Kylian Mbappe
Mbappe has yet to lift the Ballon d’Or, a surprising statistic given his decade of brilliance. He placed seventh in 2025, having come sixth a year earlier and third in 2023. But if Real Madrid or France win a major title in 2026, Mbappe will likely be at the front of the queue. He won the World Cup as a teenager in 2018 and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final. With 12 World Cup goals to his name, he needs just five more to overtake Miroslav Klose’s all-time record.
Erling Haaland
The Manchester City striker came second to Lionel Messi in the 2023 vote, before placing fifth a year later despite helping his club to a famous treble. He was 26th in the most recent vote but will surely shoot up the ranking next year. Haaland has started this season in fine form for City, while also extending his remarkable run of scoring at international level. He has now netted in each of his last eight appearances for Norway, bagging 14 times in total, and looks set for his first World Cup in 2026. That could be the perfect platform.
Ousmane Dembele
The 2025 winner faces the challenge of proving he can sustain his peak. Dembele thrived after being moved centrally by Luis Enrique at PSG, but injuries remain a concern. Few voters reward back-to-back winners, yet if Paris retain the Champions League or if France reclaim their World Cup crown, Dembele could well be in the conversation again.
Jude Bellingham
Bellingham’s first two seasons at Real Madrid proved he belongs among the elite. His age, box-to-box dynamism and knack for decisive goals make him England’s best hope of producing a Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen in 2001. A starring role at the World Cup or a second Champions League title could transform him from contender to favourite.
Harry Kane
Now spearheading Bayern Munich, Kane continues to score at a rate few can match. He was unlucky to finish outside the 2025 top 10 despite firing Bayern to domestic success and finally lifting his first major trophy. The England captain has scored more than 40 goals in each of his first two seasons in Germany and already has 13 in just seven games this term. Voters know Kane will deliver domestically; the question is whether he can crown his career with a Champions League triumph or inspire England to glory at the World Cup.
Mohamed Salah
Salah has been remarkably consistent, but has never come closer than fourth in the Ballon d’Or vote. At 33, he may have only one more realistic chance. With Liverpool well-placed in both the Premier League and Champions League, plus Egypt chasing AFCON and perhaps even World Cup glory, 2026 could yet be the year the Egyptian King gets the recognition many feel he deserves.
Pedri
Often overshadowed by Yamal at Barcelona, Pedri remains one of the most complete midfielders in world football. Spain’s 2026 World Cup campaign could provide the perfect stage for him to step out of his younger teammate’s shadow and win the Ballon d’Or that eluded predecessors Xavi and Iniesta.
Ballon d’Or 2026 verdict
The 2026 Ballon d’Or race promises to be one of the most open in years. Yamal may be the early betting favourite, but with a World Cup on the horizon and legends like Mbappe, Haaland and Kane all desperate to seize their moment, the destiny of the Golden Ball remains a mystery for now.
