Barcelona achieved a historic feat as they claimed an emphatic 5-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in their Supercopa de Espana semi-final on Wednesday night.
Hansi Flick’s side’s victory was the biggest by any team in a single match in the Spanish Super Cup history.
Barcelona Qualify for Fourth Straight Supercopa Final
Having won their previous eight games across competitions, Barcelona entered Wednesday’s semi-final as the overwhelming favourites. To his credit, Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde did not surrender psychologically before the first blast of the whistle.
Valverde urged Athletic to learn from Espanyol’s mistakes to make it an uncomfortable night for the Blaugrana. However, their finishing was far from perfect, as they failed to score despite generating an xG of 1.76. Barca scored five from an xG of 2.09.
Ferran Torres drew first blood for the Catalans, applying an instinctive finish to send Fermin Lopez’s botched shot beyond the goal line. In the 30th minute, Lopez dispatched a tidy shot to finish off a vintage Barcelona team move.
Roony Bardghji, who has been Michael Laudrup’s standout Barcelona newcomer, made it 3-0 in the 34th minute. Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon has to share some of the blame for the goal, as he failed to hold Bardghji’s seemingly straightforward shot.

Four minutes later, Raphinha got in on the act. He cut in from the left side, beat his marker, and dispatched a powerful strike to find the near-post corner.
In the 52nd minute, Raphinha doubled his money, applying another thumping finish from inside the area.
With the victory, Barcelona have now qualified for four straight Spanish Super Cup finals. They won the trophy in 2023 and 2025, with Real Madrid winning the 2024 edition. Overall, they have won the competition a record 15 times.
