‘Battle Of Pittodrie’

Aberdeen v Rangers is one of the most anticipated matches of the SPL season and is probably just as fiesty as the Old Firm derby. The two sides have been huge rivals for years, since Aberdeen were the main threats to the Old Firm in the eighties and the horror tackle from Neil Simpson which seriously injured Iain Durrant of Rangers. The Aberdeen supporters sing songs about the Ibrox Disaster in 1972 which shows how intense this match really is.

The SPL Champions haven’t won in the Granite City since 2006 when Paul Le Guen’s Rangers won 2-1 with Sionko and Novo scoring the goals, earlier in the season, the two-sides fought out a lacklustre 0-0 draw at Ibrox. Rangers are boucing back from a 2-0 defeat from Stuttgart which saw them eliminated from Europe and they have a small boost because Madjid Bougherra is in contention for a start but has to compete with Danny Wilson and David Weir. Another boost for Rangers is the return of Steven Naismith who is back from injury after missing the game on Tuesday night, however, Jerome Rothen remains in Paris with Swine Flu.

Aberdeen welcome back Chris Maguire after suspension but are still without Gary McDonald who was sent-off last weekend against Motherwell. Mark McGhee’s side still has a few other injury problems to key-players with Sone Aluko, Zander Diamond and Fraser Fyive still out injured, Diamond is set to return to training next week.
