How Bayern Munich can beat Liverpool and Man City to transfer of Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has become a transfer target for Bayern Munich – but they face competition from Man City and Liverpool for his signature.

But can the Bundesliga giants tempt him away from England? We’ve looked at three reasons that could see the Crystal Palace captain join Bayern ahead of two Premier League giants.

Marc Guehi transfer could reunite him with a friendly face at Bayern Munich

A reunion with former Crystal Palace teammate Michael Olise could be a factor that Bayern could use to tempt the talismanic centre-back to leave the Premier League for the Bundesliga.

Olise has been one of the first names on manager Vincent Kompany’s starting team sheet after taking a short time to settle in at the Allianz Arena.

Guehi and Olise have been separated since the latter completed his move from England to Germany in July 2024 after spending three years alongside his captain.

There is a high likelihood that Olise would have been looked after by many entities after arriving at Selhurst Park from Reading as a 19-year-old, including Guehi.

Reportedly friends on and off the pitch, a get-together at Bayern could be just one of the three factors that see the Eagles’ captain decide to move to a completely new country and culture.

However, he will still have a familiar name alongside him on the training pitch, in the dressing room and also on match day at the Allianz Arena.

Guehi’s genuine opportunity to win the Champions League

The temptation to win further silverware might also play a factor despite lifting the 2024/25 FA Cup and this season’s Community Shield. It’s also not outside the realms of an impossibility that Palace are out of the running to win the Conference League this campaign either.

And while Palace remain in the picture for a European trophy,  it is Bayern who currently have a better chance of winning the European silverware.

The six-time winners of the competition, including the European Cup, are on the brink of qualifying for the round of 16 in this season’s competition, without needing the additional headache of having to participate in two play-off round matches.

Bayern last celebrated an overall victory in UEFA’s pinnacle club competition in the 2019/20 campaign after beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final after Kingsley Coman’s second-half header.

With it looking near impossible that Bayern will fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, courtesy of their domestic dominance, Guehi doesn’t have anything to worry about here.

Bayern can offer higher wages to Guehi

While money might not be the decisive factor, Bayern are reportedly offering higher wages than Liverpool were willing to do in the summer to try to convince Guehi to join.

Reportedly to be on around £62,500 per week at Palace, including bonuses, there is a very high chance that Bayern will be offering more than that to secure the England international’s signature on the dotted line at the Allianz Arena.

If remaining at Palace for at least another year isn’t on Guehi’s menu, he could still remain in the Premier League with the current defending champions, Liverpool.

So with other clubs also reportedly being credited with an interest in Guehi, will a decision come in the January transfer window or will everyone be kept waiting a little longer?

Bayern, Liverpool and Man City can all offer starting spots to Guehi

Briefly touching upon the potential negatives facing Guéhi if he decides to stay in the Premier League with either Liverpool or Manchester City. Bayern supporters might want to read the following.

Beginning with the defending champions, it’s certainly not a secret in football that they have been looking for Virgil van Dijk’s long-term replacement.

However, with Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez having been regularly checking in and out of the treatment room and Giovanni Leoni only 19 years old, surely Guehi won’t face any problems going straight into the Reds’ first team.

In terms of City, they find themselves in a similar position to Liverpool. John Stones is out of contract in the summer, and Abdukodir Khusanov is currently out of manager Pep Guardiola’s plans.

That leaves the Citizens with only Rúben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and Nathan Aké. With Gvardiol being ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken tibia, the Croatian will need time to recover.

So if Guehi were to head from London to Manchester, he stands a very good chance of being one of City’s two starting centre-backs.
