Bayern Munich are widely expected to reach out to Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi in early January.
Guehi’s current Palace contract is due to expire on June 30, with clubs outside England free to speak to him about a summer free transfer once he enters the final six months of that deal.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are also thought to be considering moves for Guehi, but Bayern’s interest is much firmer at this stage, and the German champions intend to steal a march on their transfer rivals by attempting to strike a pre-contract agreement as early as possible.
Liverpool at a disadvantage in Marc Guehi transfer battle
Liverpool came very close to signing Marc Guehi last summer. A transfer fee of £35 million was agreed for Guehi by the Reds and Palace, who gave their captain permission to travel to Merseyside for a medical late in the transfer window.
But Palace eventually decided to call the deal off at the last minute, having failed to secure a replacement. Palace knew that by choosing not to sell Guehi, they would likely lose him on a free transfer 12 months down the line.
Guehi could yet still end up at Liverpool should his heart remain set on a move to Anfield. However, Liverpool are now at a disadvantage in the Guehi transfer battle, because they cannot pre-agree a summer free transfer in January, while the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona can.
If they want to make sure they land Guehi — who has been a rock in a Palace defence that has conceded just 12 goals in 15 Premier League games this season — then Liverpool might need to re-agree a transfer fee with Palace in January. However, while they try to strike a deal with Palace, Bayern and Co have the opportunity to go straight to the player and potentially present him with an offer he cannot refuse.

Bayern Munich plan to pay Marc Guehi more than Liverpool
FootballBlog.co.uk understands that Bayern Munich intend to offer Marc Guehi a contract with a weekly wage significantly higher than what he agreed with Liverpool last summer.
Bayern have more room for manoeuvre financially because they would not need to pay a transfer fee.
The wage structure at the Allianz Arena is also generally more flexible than Liverpool’s.
Bayern’s overall wage budget is believed to be around 30% bigger, while the likes of Jonathan Tah, Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano all earn more than double the weekly wage of Ibrahima Konate, who has started all of Liverpool’s first 15 Premier League games this season.
Liverpool may be in a position to offer more money at the end of the season, especially if Mo Salah has been removed from the Anfield wage bill by then. He is wanted by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, where Salah could receive a huge pay rise.
But money is not the only reason Guehi might be tempted to say yes to Bayern. The German giants are one of the best teams in the world right now. Bayern are practically guaranteed domestic silverware, while also being serious contenders in Europe.
Meanwhile, Liverpool currently sit 10th in the Premier League and are going through an uncomfortable rebuild. They need Guehi more than Bayern, but the sporting project and extra money on offer in Bavaria have the potential to come up trumps in the upcoming pre-contract talks.
