Aston Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury.
The France international was forced off inside the opening minutes of Villa’s FA Cup win over Tottenham on January 10, and after further assessment, there is now a growing belief it will keep him sidelined for the long term.
Boubacar Kamara injury latest
Kamara picked up the injury early on against Spurs, and initially there was optimism inside the club that the damage was limited.
Villa had suggested a recovery window of two to three weeks, but that outlook has since changed dramatically.
Speaking ahead of the recent home game against Everton, Unai Emery hinted at a more concerning diagnosis.
“Kamara is out, his knee,” Emery said. “We are checking him and he’s visiting some doctors. We are going to know about him in a few days but of course not available and maybe for a long time.”
Multiple sources close to the situation now expect Kamara’s absence to extend far beyond the initial estimates, with fears the midfielder will not return before the end of the campaign.
Aston Villa midfield options
Losing Kamara is a significant blow for Villa as they push for Champions League qualification. The 26-year-old has been central to Emery’s system, offering balance and control in front of the defence.
Villa’s midfield options are already stretched, and Kamara’s ability to shield the back line and progress the ball has been difficult to replace when he has previously been unavailable.
His absence could force Emery to rethink his midfield setup for the run-in across domestic and European competitions.
To further complicate matters, John McGinn was forced off in the defeat to Everton, although the extent of that injury is still unknown.
Amadou Onana has also been out with a hamstring injury but is expected to be back by the end of the month.
In the meantime, Emery only has Youri Tielemans and Lamare Bogarde as senior midfield options, with 18-year-old George Hemmings also making a couple of appearances in recent weeks.
Kamara injury history
The setback is particularly cruel given Kamara’s recent fitness struggles. Since arriving from Marseille in 2022, he has endured several spells on the sidelines.
Most notably, Kamara ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in February 2024, an injury that ruled him out for eight months.
While he had worked his way back into Emery’s plans this season, this latest knee issue raises fresh concerns over his long-term durability.
ACL injuries are notoriously difficult to come back from in terms of reaching the same physical peak as prior.
What games will Kamara miss for Villa?
Well, if the latest Kamara injury update is accurate, all of them!
Aston Villa are next in action on Thursday when they face Fenerbahce in the Europa League, and Emery will be without at least two of his most trusted midfielders.
With decisive weeks ahead in both Europe and the Premier League, a season-ending injury for Kamara adds further pressure on Villa’s squad depth.
Whether they will dip into the transfer market to alleviate these problems remains to be seen.
