Two defeats, first to Bristol City and then away at Brighton and Hove Albion have put the brakes on Southampton’s promotion push. Now level on points with West Ham and just two ahead of Cardiff and Middlesbrough, The Saints will be without their goal getting striker, Rickie Lambert, for 3 matches.
The league’s top scorer was sent off for raising an arm at Brighton, and unless his punishment is shortened by appeal, Southampton will have to try and find a suitable replacement.
With Connolly having played 90 minutes at Brighton after injury and Guly Do Prado able to partner him up front, things may not be as bad as they at first seem. However, it is unlikely that these two will possess the fire power needed if Southampton are to maintain their push for automatic promotion.
Saints’ boss, Nigel Adkins, has committed to bringing in some new faces in the January window. Quite who those players will be is open to speculation at the moment as Adkins has refused to be drawn on his targets. Southampton continue to do their purchasing quietly and effectively. I expect to see Nicky Maynard or Lucas Jutkiewicz turning up for training at Staplewood in the next couple of weeks.
