Burst sewage pipe delays Sunderland match

The match between Manchester United and Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday was delayed due to a burst sewage pipe in the Manchester United dressing room. The match finished with the score of 0-0 for Man Utd to drop more points away from Old Trafford. The incident happened during the team’s pre-match warm-up, and when the players returned to the dressing room, they were greeted by an unbearable stench.

John O’Shea and Edwin van der Sar talked about the incident and its damage to MUTV. Some players’ suits, shoes and washbags had to be thrown away, and the Man Utd kitman Albert Morgan had a tough task of cleaning up the shinpads and other items before the match kicked off. John and Edwin’s comments were:

John O’Shea

“I think my suit’s in the skip! I think it will have to be burned for health reasons.”

“It was a strange smell when we came back in from the warm-up and when we realised what happened, I think about eight or ten suits had to be burned. Thankfully we weren’t sitting down in the dressing room when it happened!”

Edwin Van der Sar

“I just came out from my warm-up and they put us in a different room and said ‘don’t go in the dressing room’. The smell was horrendous, so a lot of lads’ suits, washbags and shoes had to be thrown away.”

“Albert was struggling to get the shinpads cleaned and everything, but in the end we managed and I think it was a rare moment.”
