Chelsea last season started their campaign in all competition with a new coach in the person of Andres Villas-Boas who tried to change their style of play and tried to revolve the team by playing young once rather than the old guards in the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and co. with the 4-3-3 formation which in the end saw the end of AVB’s reign at Chelsea end so early at Stanford bridge. During his reign saw the likes of Nicolas Anelka, Alex departed to china and France respectively, he also fallen out with Lampard, Cole, Torres and other senior players. He gave Daniel Sturridge a lot of playing time by playing on the right flanks more often and Juan Mata on the left with Torres and Drogba sharing the centre forward position and yet fail produce to produce results.
By March when Roberto Di-Matteo was named as the interim coach after the departure of AVB, Chelsea were struggling in the league lying below the top four which means no champions league football for them the following season and were humiliated by Napoli in Italy with a 3-1 defeat(that particular game saw Lampard and Cole relegated to the bench) and where already knocked out of the league cup. Di-Matteo’s magic saw him play the old guards and playing more defensive style using the 4-2-3-1 formation with Lampard playing in a deeper role in front of the back four alongside Mikel, with Ramirez, Mata and Kalou playing behind Drogba as a lone striker. With Chelsea ended up winning the F.A. cup and the UEFA champions league and Chelsea scoring 65, conceding 46 and 64 points in the league Finishing 6th (worst performance the Roman era) with Sturridge being their Top scorer in the league with 11 goals and Lampard their top scorer in all competition with 16 goals, Mata scored 12, Sturridge and Drogba 13 each.
Beginning the new season saw Chelsea signed a lot of exciting young players like Eden Hazard, Marko Marin, Victor Moses, Oscar and Ceaser Azpilicuata and also saw the departure of Drogba, Kalou, Bosingwa, Meireles, Essien (loan) and the promotion of another young and exciting Brazilian Lucas Piazon and the demotion of Malouda in to the youth team. So far so good in the league with Hazard showing some touch of brilliance, Oscar shows why he cost that much at that young age with two beautiful strikes in his champions league debut against Juventus. The only problem is Fernando Torres not living up to expectations, although he already scored 4 goals in all competitions but refusing to convince people, and the only replacement Chelsea has for him is Sturridge who was just given 10 minutes in the league and Chelsea did not find a replacement for Drogba.
With Oscar, Mata and Hazard already played together shows some signs of changes in the style of play because these are players who can hold on to the ball, have flair and can make a difference at any point in time with their creativity. Lampard who was the top scorer last season now operating in a more defensive role will now deprive Chelsea with some goals since he can not get to the penalty area more often. Chelsea is going to miss Drogba a lot with his strength to win 50-50 balls, scoring in big games and his character and desire to play at the top level, Torres on the other hand is now getting the his confidence back but likes to hold the ball with him so much instead of being at right position and allow the likes of Hazard, Oscar and Mata do that.
Chelsea are still unbeaten in the league with five matches played, scoring 9 goals and conceding just 2 goals(best in the league so far with Arsenal who Chelsea will be facing this weekend) and making 4 clean sheets. Played one champions league game scoring 2 and conceding 2 with 1 point against the Italian champions, Juventus. Played one league cup game scoring 6 and not conceding a single goal and the F.A. cup yet to begin as well as the world club championship to begin in December. Although being beaten by Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in the community shield and super cup respectively, Chelsea have the chance to end their season with silver wares.
