Coventry City 1-2 Notts County

Just when I thought it was getting good we go back to being poor. Reality of Coventry City FC for the past 10 year really. One thing we are not, consistent!!! On a 5 game unbeaten run going in to this home tie with away day specialist Notts County I actually thought we’d stopped the sloppiness and have turned into a real unit, I was wrong! After bottling a 2 goal lead at Swindon last week Mark Robins named an unchanged side for the visit of Notts County. When I saw the team news for the away side I was very upset to see Lee Hughes on the bench who came on in the second half. Personally thought he shouldn’t even of been in the squad, just for the circumstances. On to the football, we basically dominated the first half; they did the second, thought they deserved the win in all accounts. The home side started the better with an early chance for John Fleck whose shot was well saved by keeper Bartosz Bialkowski. The polish keeper was called into action again when he parried away Callum Ball shot but only to John Fleck who blasted over, should of at least kept it down. Pacey winger Jamal Campbell Rice went close with a free kick but it was comfortably saved by Joe Murphy. We were inches away from scoring as James Bailey low cross just need the faintish of touches by Ball to send us into the lead. Notts County then had a good chance as on the counter attack the ball went to Jeff Hughes who I thought was going to score, but Murphy saved well. The Irishman however could do nothing for the next effort as Andre Boucaud was allowed to run unchallenged and his long range shot flew into the net with Murphy unable to keep it out. That was it for the first half, very harsh on the skyblues but we really should of finished our chances. I was hoping we’d continue how we started but it wasn’t to be, very poor second half in all honesty. The away side with their 1000+ away fans I reckon started how they left off with a few speculative shots which were no trouble for Murphy, thing that worried me was they got more chance to run at our players as no one would commit on loose balls which was frustrating. I thought they made it 2-0 when a goalmouth scramble ended up with Francois Zoko header towards goal was going in until Murphy scrambled to his right hand side and was able to put it behind for a corner. City tried changing things around with Steven Jennings and Cody McDonald coming on for captain Carl Baker and James Bailey. The substitution nearly worked as a ball over the top came to Fleck who I thought should have had a crack at goal but unselfishly tried to play in McDonald but it was daringly cleared. On 78 minute Chris Hussey replaced Jamie Reckord and Zoko went off and Lee Hughes came on to a thunderous roar of boos. The away side doubled their lead and near enough ended any comeback as a neat one two between Yoann Arquin and a team mate let him curl a lovely shot past Murphy. There was some cheer for the home fans as Fleck’s corner was headed home by Richard Wood which gave the home fans something to cheer about but that was it for chances. City slump back into the relegation zone, could there be another relegation battle on the horizon? Mark Robins needs to stump out the inconsistency and getting a playing well mentality.
