Diop extends Pompey Contract

Midfielder Papa Bouba Diop has handed a welcome boost for his side Portsmouth today, as he signed a new contract extension which will see him at the club until 2011.

The Senegal international also has the option to further his contract until 2012, on top of his existing contract.

Diop remains one of the few survivors from Portsmouth’s 2008 FA Cup winning-squad, and this new sign of commitment will go down well with the Fratton Faithful.

CEO Peter Storrie was elated that the 31-year-old had extended his current deal, while admitting the imposing midfielder had wanted to sign earlier.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Storrie said: “It’s good news. Papa’s a strong midfielder and it’s great that he has committed himself to Pompey.

“Papa wanted to extend his contract last season but he injured his knee so first we wanted to make sure he was fit and there were no problems. That’s the case so we were keen to get him signed up.”

Pompey’s medical team are hoping Bouba Diop will be ready and available for Pompey’s next league encounter, against Bolton Wanderers on September 12 at Fratton Park.

He had previously suffered a hamstring injury earlier last month against Birmingham, but Diop has already been back running since.
