I had a strange thought whilst watching the Infamous Sepp Blatter conference the other day when he used the words “there is no crisis at fifa” . I was reminded of a certain Blackadder Quote
“This is a crisis. A large crisis. In fact, if you got a moment, it’s a twelve-story crisis with a magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24-hour portage, and an enormous sign on the roof, saying ‘This Is a Large Crisis”
People are sacked then re instated allegation after the allegation. The fifa general secretary himself says the world cup was brought then produced a rather farcical statement to back track on it. You get the picture Sepp Blatter the president of FIFA a huge global organisation round the world blind to the faults of those around him or simply choosing to turn a blind eye to it. Blatter is a born survivor and anyone out there who thought his time had come this past week or so was a victim of wishful thinking.
The Man is a master at playing football politics he builds relationships round the world he knows who to flatter and has built up a insurmountable power base. When he got voted back in this week in a shameful one man on a paper no choice ballot, countless reforms were put were brought forward.
The top one of these was the world cup vote being taken of the executive committee. This was rather a pointless reform anyway as the executive committee still gets to decide on the short list? So much for reform then?
Wether any of these reforms take place or are a little more than mere smoke and mirrors is largely irrelevant as the great strategist of the world of football has survived and was always going to do so.
The FA has also played it’s part in this grand farce too we passed the opportunity up when we had a chance to put a reform candidate against Blatter and Bin Hammam. That really was a time for action and sadly we really missed the boat on that one it certainly wasnt our finest hour. We sat back in the shadows and didn’t take a stand till far too late when it really was too little too late .
Yes FIFA needs to be more transparent that particular argument has been going on years and an independent review or body to look at some of the practices or allegations in FIFA would be a help too.
But If I can take a few Minutes to look at our own FA. Part of our problem I believe is the revolving door mentality behind our senior figures from all the different chief executives in charge to now the Chairman of the fa David Bernstien. Do we really know who is in charge at the fa? who holds the reins? who’s accountable for all of this?
Do we really believe he is the man to fit to lead our fa, to take care of the best interests of our game? We seem incapable of making friends and maintaining those on the international stage. Though to be fair to Bernstein when the FA has so many existing problems the chairman seems to be the least of them at the minute.
The FA seem now more than ever to be stuck down to the whims of the big clubs you only have to look out from the various pull outs from the various international squads. When the self interest of the clubs is over-riding the concerns of our national games it’s a concern the FA needs to deal with.
We need strong men inside the FA who are prepared to take the decisions that are needed to improve our standing in world football and get rid of this perceived arrogance which is muddying our standing amongst our fellow members in Uefa.
There are some signs of improvement the work of Gareth Southgate is now getting some recognition and it looks as if it’s beginning to get recognised and the improvements that need to be made and being made. Smaller pitchs and games from the kids up to try to produce an improved technical type of player.
These are the type of people we need back in the FA a younger vibrant strong personality. Otherwise the FA will always be this rudderless ship without a captain and we can never have a hope of ever improving fifa if our own house is so shambolic.
Thanks for reading I’m always keen on discussing anything football and am on twitter @wisemanalex
