It started quickly, a goal for burnley within 15 minutes which shocked the home fans, stunning them into silence. Burnley more then held their own in the first half, Tottenham where struggling and in dyer need of a change. Harry Redknapp didn’t make it though, he saw out the first half, which was more of the same of the first 15 minutes just without the goals.
It remained 1-0 right until half time, and the Burnley fans where having a great time. They where given half of park lane, something which is given for cup games. Jamie O’Hara came on in the second half; Bentley was the man to go off.
O’Hara made a positive impact on the game, with spurs leveling things on the 47th minute. Spurs where looking the much brighter side now, they where passing the ball around and shades of last season where starting to show. Jamie O’Hara got the second goal, which says a lot about how he was playing, getting into the right places; something that David Bentley wasn’t doing.
Chris Eagles, the Burnley midfielder was once a season ticket holder at White Hart Lane, I’m sure he was having a great time, and 2-1 down wasn’t such a bad result for Burnley, but it all went done hill from there….
Roman Pavyluchenko went on a super run and comfortably placed the ball to the right of the goalkeeper, 3-1.
Duff put the icing on the cake for Spurs when he headed into his own net to make the score 4-1. Defoe looked on with eager eyes, knowing that he would be able to play in the final if the chance arose. Before the game he was giving a standing ovation when he was paraded around the pitch, the spurs supporters were giving there long awaited wish in Jermain.
Harry Redknapp gave his view on the game:
Redknapp said: “At half-time you could not see that result coming, that was for sure.
“At half-time I had to get in to them big time and sort a few of them out. We were a different team but we’ve got to play like that all the time.”
Redknapp added: “I was impressed with Burnley – I thought they were terrific. In the first half they were fantastic, they played five in the middle, they broke and they passed the ball.
“But we can’t play like we did in the first half. We squeezed up second half, got in contact with them and put them under pressure. “It was nice to get that early goal after half-time. It gave the crowd a lift because the first half was a real disappointment. We really were poor.”
Burnely have given themselves a mountain to climb in the second leg, a 3-0 win will do, but with Jermain Defoe available, not many will favour spurs not to score.
