Lyon’s Brazilian striker Fred has won many admierers since his arrival at the Ligue 1 Champions in 2005. But season after season, he was found himself playing less and less games for Les Gones. And, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2009, the 25-year-old has been subject to widespread rumours that he could be heading to White Hart Lane at a cut price of £4.5 million.
Any new arrival concerning the strikeforce would probably spell the end of Darren Bent’s carear in North London, as Roman Pavlyuchenko has impressed immensely in 2009’s opening games and looks the most likely partner for Jermain Defoe. Although Fred has fallen down the pecking order in recent seasons, he has still impressed enough to earn nine appearences for his native Brazil, scoring an impressive five goals. The OL player has also admitted that he is enjoying Spurs’ interest, and would find it hard to turn down a move to England.
“England is a big league and it is natural for any player to want to go there,” he said in The Daily Telegraph.
Jermain Defoe has been January’s first acquisition for the Lilywhites, and Harry Redknapp seems keen to add to that list. One player that looks like he won’t be signing, though, is Stewart Downing, after his club Middlesbrough turned down his transfer request, and in addition, two bids from Tottenham.
