Josh Brownhill Breaks Cover to Explain Decision Behind Shock Saudi Transfer Switch

Josh Brownhill has opened up on his decision to snub English interest for his next move to make the shock switch to Saudi.

The 29-year-old central midfielder became a free agent after leaving the Clarets at the end of last season despite the club’s desire to keep hold of their star man.

Brownhill made 44 appearances in all competitions at Turf Moor last term alone where he notched 18 goals and provided six assists as he helped them towards promotion to the Premier League.

It was his most prolific campaign and earned him the opportunity to seek a new challenge which is exactly what the former Bristol City player did when he considered his options.

Celtic and Brendan Rodgers were hoping to sign Brownhill and the Hoops made an attempt back in January when they are understood to have reached out to his agents.

Josh Brownhill joined Al-Shabab in Saudi Pro League

That move never materialised and, after reported Premier League interest in the player, Brownhill instead opted to make a money-spinning switch to Saudi where he joined Al Shabab in their Pro League.

It was a deal right out of left-field and reportedly will earn the star around £100,000 per WEEK if reports are to be believed.

Given the finances on the table, Brownhill would have been mad to pass up such an opportunity, and now he has provided an explanation as to why he made the move.

Without, of course, mentioning the glaringly obvious.

“I feel really honoured to join Al Shabab,” he said of his decision.

“I’m really happy I’m here and I’m just delighted to get it over the line and to be here. After speaking to the Prince and having a really good conversation with the coach, it really attracted me to join.

Why Brownhill chose Saudi over Premier League

“We had some really good conversations and the passion and the knowledge the Prince speaks, it was something I was really excited for.

“The way the manager plays, formation, system and the vision they see, that’s what really attracted me.

“The atmosphere has been amazing since I’ve been here. From all the members of staff, the kit man, everybody, the fans as well, it’s been really great. I just can’t wait to get started and show people what I can do.

“The message I want to give to Al Shabab fans is that I’m really happy to be here, I’m delighted and I can’t wait for a really successful season and show the fans how I perform and how I play.

“Hopefully I will score a lot of goals and we will be aiming to win a lot of trophies this season.”
