Sheffield United are set to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Yorkshire after agreeing a loan deal with Manchester City until the end of the season.
The 30-year-old midfielder is due to complete a medical ahead of the move to Bramall Lane. The agreement does not include an option to buy.
Kalvin Phillips loan agreed between Sheffield United and Man City
Phillips has found opportunities limited at Manchester City and has made just one appearance this season – a brief Carabao Cup outing against Huddersfield Town.
Since arriving from Leeds United in a £42 million deal in 2022, he has started only four matches for City in all competitions.
Given his £150,000 wages, a sale was always unlikely, and a loan exit had been expected this month, with Wolves linked with Phillips earlier in the window.
Now, Sheffield United have moved quickly to secure an agreement as they look to strengthen their midfield for the Championship run-in.
Why Kalvin Phillips is leaving Manchester City
Phillips has struggled to establish himself under Pep Guardiola, with injuries and competition for places restricting his involvement.
A shoulder problem disrupted his first season at the Etihad, while his standing in the squad never fully recovered after Guardiola publicly questioned his fitness following the 2022 World Cup.
Loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town failed to reignite his City career. Last season at Ipswich, Phillips made 22 appearances during a campaign that ended in relegation, while his time in east London brought only limited game time.
Phillips is still under contract at City until 2028.
What Kalvin Phillips brings to Sheffield United
At his best, Phillips remains a high-level Championship midfielder with leadership and experience.
He was one of the standout performers in the Premier League during Leeds United’s rise under Marcelo Bielsa and played a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final.
Sheffield United sit 17th in the table, seven points above the relegation zone, and are looking to stabilise after a turbulent period.
Phillips’ arrival adds control and composure in central areas as the Blades aim to pull clear of trouble.
Reunion with Patrick Bamford at Bramall Lane
The move will also see Phillips reunited with former Leeds team-mate Patrick Bamford, who joined Sheffield United in November.
Bamford has scored six goals in 13 appearances and has quickly become an important figure in the squad.
Chris Wilder, back in charge after returning earlier this season, will hope the familiarity between the pair helps Phillips settle quickly.
With experience of promotion battles and high-pressure environments, Phillips is expected to play a central role as Sheffield United look to secure their Championship status.
