Wolves are weighing up a move for out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
The 30-year-old is firmly on the fringes at the Etihad, and with his route into Pep Guardiola’s side blocked, a short-term exit is again being discussed.
Is Kalvin Phillips still at Man City?
Kalvin Phillips is still at Manchester City and is contracted until 2028.
He joined City from Leeds in 2022 at the peak of his career, at a time he was an England regular and had even been named the national side’s Player of the Year in 2021.
But since then, minutes have been scarce.
Phillips was brought in initially to provide competition – or at least backup – for Rodri, but that hasn’t worked out at all.
Injuries have mostly derailed any momentum, but uninspired loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich haven’t exactly rejuvenated him either.
Now, with both Rodri and Nico Gonzalez ahead of him in the defensive midfield position, his chances of getting game time are minimal.
This season, he has made just one first-team appearance – a seven-minute cameo against Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup.
Guardiola has accepted responsibility for the lack of opportunities while continuing to speak highly of Phillips’ attitude around the squad.
Wolves consider Kalvin Phillips move
Wolves are now weighing up whether Phillips could help their fight to stay in the Premier League.
Talks were held last month, and the midfielder remains on their radar as pressure builds at Molineux.
Atletico Madrid are eyeing up Joao Gomes, with the club are expecting more late interest, and any departure would leave a significant hole in midfield.
Phillips’ experience at both club and international level is seen as a possible solution for the final stretch of the season.
For Wolves, they would be getting a player who is no stranger to relegation battles and Premier League intensity, even if his recent form has been disrupted.
Guardiola on Kalvin Phillips
Guardiola has previously addressed Phillips’ situation publicly, stressing that selection decisions rest solely with him while praising the midfielder’s character.
The City manager also apologised for remarks made during the 2022 World Cup about Phillips returning overweight.
The player later admitted the comments damaged his confidence and affected his family.
With his City future effectively on hold, a Wolves move could offer Phillips the clean slate he has struggled to find since leaving Leeds.
Whether it proves a genuine revival or another short-term fix may define the final chapter of his top-flight career.
