Sunderland manager and all round prat Roy Keane has blasted Stoke’s handling of the Marton fulop transfer, which has now fallen through.
Keane said, “Stoke wasted his time. They took him down there and made him an offer, Marton asked for a bit more but they were not far away. When you meet for negotiations, you negotiate. It’s a disgrace.” ”To treat a player like that is disgraceful, they have totally disrespected him. I’m not happy with them but I am happy to have Marton back because he is a top goalkeeper.”
The deal fell through as while Fulop was stalling over wages the Potters snapped up cheaper, but no less able replacement Thomas Sorensen on a free transfer.
Tony Pulis attempted to calm the situation while defending his stance, saying,”Stoke City and Suderland agreed a fee, we just couldn’t agree a fee with the agent,” He added, “I can’t talk for Roy and of course I have total respect for everyone at Sunderland. He’s got to say what he’s got to say but we will make decisions that will be for the benefit of Stoke City.” Don’t expect any Christmas cards or players to be exchanged between the two for a while. Moves for Sunderland duo Danny higginbotham and Dean Whitehead had been on the cards but these look less likely given the current animosity between the two clubs.
Keane’s tirade semms a tiny bit hypocritical given his comments a week ago that the wages players were given these days is a disgrace. Now to not play a greedy player more than the club can afford when there is a more financially viable alternative available is a disgrace.
I see Stoke’s actions as enthusing, we have ended up with a very good goalkeeper (without paying a transfer fee), saved £3 million to spend elsewhere and not given in to the excessive wage demands of a player.
