Today, it was reported by News of the World that Manchester United have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspurs over the transfer of Dimitar Berbatov to the European and domestic Champions. Ferguson has long been looking for a pure striker with a better physique than Rooney and Tevez. The fee agreed is £24 million, £7 million short of what the club spent for Wayne Rooney in 2004.
Berbatov’s goals in the last five seasons were:
Bayer Leverkusen
2003/04 –> 19 goals
2004/05 –> 26 goals
2005/06 –> 24 goals
Tottenham
2006/07 –> 23 goals
2007/08 –> 23 goals
The striker will surely return a 20+ goal tally for the club in the first season, as he has already settled down in the Premiership and in England. Berbatov’s departure will be part of Juande Ramos’ reinvention of Tottenham. Although the fee was reportedly agreed, the transfer has been put on hold until Tottenham can find a replacement.
