Manchester United once again explored the possibility of bringing Danny Welbeck back to Old Trafford, with discussions around the former academy graduate forming part of their summer-long hunt for a new striker.
Man Utd Considered Welbeck Transfer
The Red Devils revisited the idea of a Danny Welbeck homecoming transfer after manager Ruben Amorim and parts of the recruitment team highlighted his Premier League experience and history at the club.
Welbeck, now 34, finished last season as Brighton’s joint-top scorer in the league with 10 goals — level with Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma.
United held internal talks over offering the striker a deal running to 2027. However, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was reluctant to sanction a two-year contract for a player turning 35 in November, instead favouring a one-year plus option.
Ultimately, the proposal was never formalised, and Welbeck stayed at the Amex, where he recently spoke of his happiness with life under Fabian Hurzeler.
This was the second year in a row that United had considered a move for the ex-England international, who graduated from United’s academy and spent 16 years at the club before leaving in 2014.
Sesko Signs, Hojlund Leaves
Despite the Welbeck discussions, United ultimately secured their marquee attacking signing in Benjamin Sesko, completing a £74m deal with RB Leipzig.
The Slovenian striker, 22, was chosen ahead of Ollie Watkins and other options due to his age profile and Red Bull pedigree, with director of recruitment Christopher Vivell playing a key role in the move.
The decision came at the expense of Rasmus Hojlund, who was loaned to Napoli after falling out of favour during pre-season.
Hojlund, who had hoped to fight for his place, agreed a loan-to-buy deal with Antonio Conte’s Serie A champions — reuniting with Scott McTominay in Italy.
Which Other Strikers Did Man Utd Consider Signing?
United’s pursuit of attacking reinforcements went beyond Sesko and Welbeck. Liam Delap was an early target, but his Manchester City background and preference for Chelsea ended hopes of a deal.
Hugo Ekitike was tracked before Liverpool moved decisively, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin was considered but ultimately joined Leeds United on a free transfer.
Talks were also held with Bournemouth regarding Antoine Semenyo, as an alternative to Bryan Mbeumo, though the Cherries’ £70m valuation made negotiations impossible.
