What Emi Martinez’s Failed Manchester United Move Means For Aston Villa Star Now

Emi Martinez failed in his desire to leave Aston Villa for Manchester United on deadline day.

The Argentinian World Cup winner was wanted at Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim chased alternative goalkeeper options to what he already had at his disposal.

Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have both been given a crack this season but neither has impressed and that left United scrambling to land a new stopper to come in and wear the gloves on a regular basis.

Martinez was named on the club’s list of transfer targets for the summer window before Monday night’s deadline when the window slammed shut and no more deals could be done.

But despite an approach being made by the Red Devils to Martinez and his representatives – and terms reportedly being reached on a personal level – the club did not submit an official bid.

Emiliano Martinez wanted a move to Manchester United

Man United would eventually instead seal a deal for Royal Antwerp stopper Senne Lammens for a fee believed to be in the region of around £18million.

And that left Martinez to continue with Villa for this season despite his clear desire and intention to leave Villa Park to join a new side should they have made it happen.

There has now emerged a report from the BBC suggesting why United had splashed out to bring Lammens to Old Trafford as opposed to the tried and tested, experienced Martinez.

According to the Beeb, Lammens is a known risk for the club. However, in key metrics for Amorim’s side, the Belgian is seen as being a player who ticks a lot of boxes in terms of exactly what the manager and club were looking for.

And yet, the saga still leaves focus on Martinez who, according to the Athletic, spent the entire deadline day at Bodymoor Heath waiting for a call from his supposed new club which never came.

According to other reports, a loan offer at the beginning of the pre-season plans was all that was ever really spoken about and even that ultimately failed to materialise.

Does Martinez have a future at Aston Villa?

Martinez was left out of Villa’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace last weekend with manager Unai Emery refusing to answer any questions on the 33-year-old.

So what now for the goalie?

The Argentine is seemingly not interested in a move to either Turkey or Saudi which are the two big transfer windows still open beyond this point.

So a stay at Villa is the only option. Will he be trusted to play by his boss? Time will tell.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano seems to think so, tweeting this morning: “Aston Villa are happy to continue with Emi Martínez this season as NO exit is expected after Man United deal off.

“Martínez not keen on Turkish league move and prepared to stay at Villa.

“Man United opened talks but never sent an official bid.”
