Man Utd vs Liverpool: Ferguson has last laugh

Alex Ferguson

It is not enough to say that Manchester United have today defeated Liverpool. It would be more appropriate to say that Liverpool were trashed by Man Utd. The Red Devils netted three times against the Reds, who played exceptionally bad during the 90 minutes they (ten of them anyway!) spent on the field. Surely, Benitez will be putting the blame on the referee for sending protest-boy Mascherano away. However, the truth is that Bennett had the full and best control of the game, and it is about time that players start respecting referees on the pitch. The Ashley Cole incident of last Wednesday may, or may not, have influenced Steve Bennett’s decision. The influence is an arguable topic, but the actual act, in objective terms, deserved the red card. Mascherano was practically inviting Bennett to send him off by continuously protesting against an action which did not concern him personally.

The Premier League will most likely investigate the matter and we should wait until the FA receives the referee report. However, it looks like Mr Mascherano would miss some matches for Liverpool this season for refusing to go out of the pitch immediately and necessitating the intervention of his own boss to calm him down. This has happened soon after Benitez himself was boasting that he managed to capture a better player than the ones captured by Man Utd, at a better price. This in itself is not true, and this combined with the talent of protesting that Mascherano has displayed in the Man U vs Liverpool match, show that either Mr Benitez was drunk or he didn’t know what he was saying. His face during the Man Utd game (I wouldn’t bother to mention Liverpool as they didn’t see much of the ball and Van der Sar could have stayed at home) showed his immense despair that he finds himself in. Liverpool are on the brink of missing out on Europe unless they can win the Champions League. Moyes, who was watching the game, must have been the happiest man on Earth while watching the goals going in. Benitez cannot escape it…either he dumps his rotation policy and changes the level of performances, or he will be driven out by supporters. It is truly a shame that a club with such history has never won the Premier League since it has been set up in 1992.
