How Will Manchester United Look Under Interim Boss Darren Fletcher?

We’re taking a look at how Manchester United might look under interim boss Darren Fletcher after the club sacked head coach Ruben Amorim.

Following disappointing draws against Wolves and Leeds United, Amorim delivered an explosive press conference – one that cost him his job.

Amorim was sacked on Monday after a public fallout with the club hierarchy.

He criticised the senior management, stating: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach,” and urging scouts and directors “to do their job.”

What Will Darren Fletcher Do At Manchester United?

In the wake of Amorim’s dismissal, Manchester United have turned to club legend Darren Fletcher as interim manager.

Fletcher, who made more than 300 appearances for United during the glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson, now steps in to steady the ship.

Expectations under the 41-year-old are low, with stability and morale key focus points.

United sit sixth in the table, well out of the Premier League title race.

But they are level with fifth-placed Chelsea, and only three points off Liverpool in fourth.

Fletcher’s brief is likely to include mending relationships with players sidelined under Amorim.

The likes of Kobbie Mainoo could well be brought back into the starting lineup, while experienced voices will probably be leant on in the short-term.

United’s search for a permanent successor likely began well before Monday’s surprise sacking.

But for Fletcher, the task is to prevent any further decline before the next manager is appointed.

What Formation Will Man United Play Under Darren Fletcher?

Under Amorim, United stuck almost religiously to a back three.

Critics argued such a shape didn’t suit the squad, and contributed to a lack of consistency and clarity on the field.

Early reports suggest Fletcher is likely to revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

This is a balanced and familiar shape – albeit quite risk-averse.

Such a tactical set-up allows United to solidify their defence while maintaining attacking threat.

A double-pivot ahead of a traditional back four provides stability, allowing the creativity of Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha to shine.

A 4-2-3-1 also aligns with Fletcher’s previous work with United’s youth teams.

He favoured a balanced midfield with two holding players when managing academy sides, and is likely to do the same with the first team.

How Will United Line Up Under Darren Fletcher?

Given the squad’s current availability, and with the likes of Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui away at AFCON, this is how we see United lining up at Burnley on Wendesday.

Predicted Manchester United XI:

GK: Senne Lammens
RB: Diogo Dalot
CB: Leny Yoro
CB: Lisandro Martinez
LB: Luke Shaw
DM: Casemiro
DM: Kobbie Mainoo
RW: Patrick Dorgu
AM: Bruno Fernandes (if fit)
LW: Matheus Cunha
ST: Benjamin Sesko

This XI blends youth and experience, and offers a balanced set-up that few could argue against.

Casemiro and Mainoo could form a disciplined midfield base, allowing Fernandes freedom as the chief creative outlet.

Wide attackers like Mbeumo and Cunha would be tasked with stretching defences, while Sesko offers a focal point up front.

Such a setup should make United harder to score against, and give a clear, simple role to each player.

Fletcher is not there to implement a long-term vision. He is a calming presence and trusted figure during a tumultuous period.

He will be expected to return to traditional United philosophies and have his team show unity and fight.
