Why Marc Guehi’s Failed Liverpool Transfer Doesn’t Look So Bad Right Now

Marc Guehi captaining Crystal Palace

Marc Guehi is one of England’s best defenders right now and he has been for some time.

The centre half has consistently performed for Crystal Palace since he arrived back in 2021 from Chelsea and that has earned him international recognition.

But his form across the four years with the Eagles has also brought about numerous interested parties who have been keen to take him away from Selhurst Park.

Guehi missed out on a Liverpool transfer earlier this summer.

Bayern Munich were also interested in taking the 25-year-old to the Allianz Arena before he made the decision to head to Anfield in an ill fated deal.

Newcastle United were also believed to be keeping a close eye on the stopper but as it transpired he remained with Palace.

It was an incident which left a bitter taste in Guehi’s mouth but he persisted with the club as a top professional.

Unlike Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa, Guehi’s legacy will remain intact at Selhurst.

And if anything, this campaign has shown how the player perhaps got the better end of the stick without realising at the time.

Here, we at FootballBlog take a look at why that might be exactly, and what could be next for Guehi.

Crystal Palace Premier League form

Palace this season currently sit 10th in the EPL table which is a decent start to their first nine matches.

The club have three victories and four draws in that time with only two defeats from their opening fixtures.

It has certainly been an impressive beginning and even their losses have come against Arsenal – the league leaders – and Everton away from home.

In terms of goals in the league they have scored 12 in their first nine and shipped just nine. That’s a goal per game conceded but an average of more netted at the right end.

Palace cup runs

The FA Cup is yet to kick off for the clubs in the top flight but the Eagles are soaring in the Carabao Cup.

Palace knocked out Millwall on penalties in the third round but it was Wednesday evening’s fourth round match which showed Palace as a force to be reckoned with.

Oliver Glasner’s lads comfortably dispatched of Guehi’s would-be new club Liverpool at Anfield in what was a 3-0 demolition job.

It heaps pressure on Arne Slot, who would have bossed the defender had he moved, and takes Palace through into the next round while simultaneously eliminating the Reds.

Liverpool results this season

As mentioned, Slot’s troops have started the season poorly by their normal standards and he has now failed to prevent four domestic defeats in a row.

They have also been beaten in the Champions League by Galatasaray and they are already out of one domestic competition.

Liverpool are in trouble in the Premier League, too, as they sit seventh and seven points behind Mikel Arteta’s top of the division Gunners and that is a lead on the Reds that could be insurmountable even this early.

Palace and Guehi are only two points behind the Merseyside giants and could always catch them.

Guehi Crystal Palace contract and future

Guehi’s failed move was obviously a disappointment to the player, but it cost Palace £35million.

That was a dismal piece of business for the London club but it was their decision to keep him, in the end, at the eleventh hour and scupper the paperwork for Liverpool.

Many might have questioned why and those questions may arrive again in the January transfer window when Guehi could freely sign a pre-contract to move to Anfield in the summer of next year.

He is out of contract at Selhurst in 2026 and his patience and respect will surely be rewarded with his move in the end.

All he now has to do is wait it out.
