Agent Pini Zahavi claims Brazilian footballer, Marcelo Mattos, is considering a move to Premier League side Portsmouth.
It has been said that Mattos had an outstanding season with Panathinaikos and Portsmouth are one of three Premier League clubs to have made an offer, that is according to his representative Zahavi.
Mattos has a release clause in his contract that allows him to leave for £5.9 million, it is reported that Harry Redknapp, Portsmouth manager, has made the bid.
Zahavi told Greek newspaper Goal, ”At this moment we are considering offers from English clubs, one is from Portsmouth and two more.”
Zahavi did stress that Mattos is happy at Panathinaikos and would be happy to stay on for the rest of his contract. He said “But it is possible for Mattos to stay at Panathinaikos, the player is very happy with the working conditions there and he loves the fans.
Zahavi then added “He is also very satisfied with the attitude of the people at the club. We will have to wait a few weeks as the transfer market does not officially open until July.â€
From what I found on various websites, Mattos seems to be a defensive midfielder. The first thing that pops into my head is do we really need another defensive minded midfielder. We have Hughes, Davis, Diop, Muntari, Mendes and Diarra already at the club. If this move does go through then maybe it suggests that one of the players I’ve mentioned is on their way out of the club. All of those players apart from Diop have been linked with moves away from Fratton Park. Muntari has supposedly attracted interest from Juventus and Liverpool whereas Diarra is meant to have attracted a lot of interested from Spurs. Davis on the other hand could be involved in a cash plus player deal with Middlesbrough, seeing Gary O’Neil making a shock return to the club where he started as a footballer. I have it on good authority that Mendes’ house is up for sale which suggests he is about to move away, whether that be back to Portugal it is unknown. Redknapp has said that he would like Mendes to stay as he is part of his plans for the forthcoming season.
In my opinion it would be foolish to get rid of any these players. To have a successful European campaign and a successful league run, you need a healthy sized squad, so that you always have reinforcements and don’t end up relying on youth in important games.
He apparently played in the same side as Tevez and Mascherano at Corinthians so if he’s learnt anything from them it can only benefit Pompey.
Of course this all could be agent talk and Mattos may never even enter the country, let alone come to Portsmouth. By the sounds of it, it actually looks as though Zahavi is trying to get his club to offer him a bigger contract and an increased pay rise and is using us to scare Panathinaikos into giving in to their demands.
However out of all the players that have been linked with the club so far, this deal looks the most probable.
