Michael Owen for United?

Michael Owen

News of the World has reported on Sunday that Sir Alex Ferguson has made contact with Owen’s representatives in order to push a deal between Newcastle and Man Utd for the £7 million transfer of Owen to United. Owen is said to be unsettled at the club after new owner Mike Ashley sees his wage of £115000 per week as a drain of the club’s funds. The News of the World reported that Saha is CERTAIN to be sold this transfer season, and quoted Ferguson saying that the club is looking for an experienced player like Owen to replace him.

“We will buy. Along with Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney, we may need experience in one forward position, somebody to take over from Ryan Giggs eventually. ” – Sir Alex Ferguson

Fergie believes that Owen still has the potential to be a star at the top-flight after his recent goalscoring form. Owen seems to be pressing for a move this summer, and publicly stated that he would be looking to see out his contract at the Toon and move on a free transfer in 2009.
