Portsmouth FC – Is the future a little brighter for Pompey?

Another week goes by without football and fans are suffering.

However for those down in Portsmouth, there seem to be developments nearly everyday to discuss.

It now appears that the takeover saga is complete, for now at least. Convers Sports Initiatives have appeared to make a relatively good impression thus far, although as every Pompey fan knows there is a hell of a long way to go!

Rumours of boss Steve Cotterill having anywhere between £2m and £5m to spend sound reasonable enough; the last thing we want is to go on another spending spree.

Things will need to get going soon though, as we’re now midway through June and the new football season is not that long away!

Former Ipswich captain David Norris has been drafted in, and from what I have heard will be a good signing for the club. Hopefully he will take over the central midfield role, ala Michael Brown but will hopefully through the whole season.

Many other players are needed though if Pompey expect to compete near the top of next year’s Championship. There are a lot of strong sides in the league and expect it to be very competitive.

Big clubs are coming from both the Premier League and League One and mix in the likes of Cardiff, Leeds, Reading, Middlesbrough, Leicester it makes for a mouth-watering prospect of matches.

Kevin Nolan to West Ham has probably been the most high-profile transfer to date, and the introduction of new managers including Steve McLaren and Sam Allardyce means that already there has been a lot of activity amongst the clubs.

On paper, there is a lot of good players available for Pompey to sign, but there is little point in rushing in to sign anyone. Good decisions need to be made, but not rushed.

Some of the players around include Kevin Phillips, Jason Koumas, Marlon Harewood and even Benjani. I’d be happy with any of those players. Easier said than done though.

The future then is certainly a little brighter certainly off the field, and slowly on it in terms of the playing staff.  It appears that things are slowly settling down after the years of extravagant spending.

It is a major rebuilding process, and will take time. I’d say at least 2 years. Of course Pompey fans want to go up straight away and rightly so, but it might be better for Cotterill to consolidate the club for a few seasons in the Championship and then prepare for a real promotion push come 2013/14.

Patience is needed!!
