Manchester City are eyeing a shock swoop for Rodrygo as they prepare to bid farewell to Jack Grealish.
The Real Madrid playmaker has emerged as a potential transfer target for Pep Guardiola as the manager seeks to re-establish his side’s dominance in this season’s Premier League.
City were well beaten to the title last term by rampant Liverpool but Guardiola hopes to bolster his squad’s attacking ranks, starting with Rodrygo, to challenge again.
Guardiola is set to lose a number of players at the top end of the pitch including Grealish who is on the verge of a loan move to Everton. That is expected to be concluded this week.
Why Manchester City want to sign Rodrygo
James McAtee is also closing in on an exit while Savinho is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur which would leave the Citizens short up top.
Rodrygo is now being touted as an option for the manager by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano who claims a €100million asking price has been slapped on the player’s head. That equates to around £86.5m.
The journalist also suggests that Real Madrid will not stand in the 24-year-old’s way if he does wish to pursue a move to the Etihad.
Guardiola is said to be a “big fan” of the Brazilian and that could possibly have some sway in the decision before the window closes at the beginning of September.
Man City have already pushed the boat out this summer for the likes of Tijjani Reijnders who they spent roughly €55m on while Rayan Aït-Nouri cost the club close to €40m.
James Trafford and Rayan Cherki also recently signed for City but the €100m demands for Rodrygo would dwarf any other individual transfer fee spent by the club this window.
What Rodrygo has said about Manchester City and Pep Guardiola
Rodrygo has history with City having bagged a stunning brace against them back in 2022 to knock them out of the Champions League en route to the final.
And the playmaker was open and honest in his appraisal of his potential employers when he revealed he HATES playing against them.
Speaking to the media before the two sides squared off in the same competition back in 2024, Rodrygo said: “I don’t like playing against Manchester City so much.
“Nobody likes playing against City as much as playing against us. I was happy after many games against them and I hope tomorrow’s game will be one of them.”
On Guardiola as a coach, Rodrygo paid tribute and acknowledged the Spaniard is one of the world’s best.
He added at the time: “He’s a great coach and it’s very difficult to play against his teams.”
